With the long-awaited release of DC Comic's "Suicide Squad," it's certainly fair to say the film doesn't live up to its hype. One of the movie's primary focuses is Harley Quinn—Joker's equally sadistic lover. Since the film's teaser photos and previews got released there was something about Harley Quinn that just didn't feel right to me. According to this source, Margot Robbie didn't even have to audition for the role, it was simply offered to her. Here's four reasons Harley Quinn's character isn't up to par:
1. The costume and makeup is all wrong
The "Suicide Squad" creators aimed for an edgier look with each character's appearance, but Harley Quinn doesn't make the cut. The moment I saw Quinn I thought to myself, "she looks like a high schooler dressed up as Harley Quinn for Halloween." The cotton candy pig tails are cute, but that's the thing—Harley Quinn isn't supposed to be all cute, she's expected to be edgy.
2. Not punny enough
I was deeply disappointed by the lack of puns and witty humor Quinn typically dishes out. Most of Quinn's lines consisted of flirty banter and weak dialogue. In the beginning of the movie a conversation between Quinn and a prison guard turns from frisky to porno real quick. Quinn's playful and flirtatious demeanor has always demanded attention, but Robbie's acting didn't command the audience unless the focus was on her body.
3. Relies on her sexuality too much
Leave it to Hollywood to cast a bombshell like Margot Robbie and dress her up in underwear and fishnets to pass her off as an oversexualized Harley Quinn. The latest versions of Quinn typically dress risque, but as mentioned in point one, Robbie's look screams sexy Halloween costume. There's more to Quinn than her sexuality, and although the film captures a small portion of her complex mind, it wasn't substantial enough to portray her full potential.
