So Mom and Dad roll into Vandy for two short nights and you're faced with an ultimatum: Virago or Whiskey Kitchen? But why not take your sights off of M Street (I know, but the crispy rice!), avoid last week's dance floor makeout dining with his 'rents at Saint Anejo, and explore other options? Here are my three recommendations that'll show your parents just how culinarily cultured you're becoming at college.
1. Husk
Husk can be found at 37 Rutledge Street in Nashville
Husk is hands down my favorite restaurant in Nashville. Located in a historic building near the Gulch, it houses the incredible culinary stylings of Sean Brock. This restaurant has become my go-to brunch and dinner spot when the parents are in town because of its dishes high price tags. Not only does Brock create new concoctions every day, but he also sources from a local, organic farm and uses vegetables that are grown on the restaurant’s property! One thing that remains constant, however, is the maple butter and popovers brought to the table upon being seated -- they are to die for.
2. Urban Grub
The Grub's infamous Eggs Benedict
Urban Grub successfully combines southern comfort food with the aesthetic presentation often found up North in Yankee territory. I’ve frequented the restaurant, located in 12 South, for both brunch and dinner, and have had deliciously fantastic experiences both times. Their grits (a personal favorite) are cheesy and delicious and warm. You've been warned. A cool feature of the restaurant that further distinguishes it from others in the Nashville food scene is the seating -- the tables surround a wood-burning fire pit (perfect for birthdays and date nights). While it's usually pretty crowded and tough to get a walk-in table, the service is friendly and accommodating. A must try in Nashville!
3. Fido
Oh, Fido. If you're in Nashville for the weekend and looking to spot a celeb, this is your best bet. Taylor Swift frequents the quaint cafe located in the Hillsboro area, as well as a number of other country superstars. Though the food at Fido is great -- I suggest the veggie burger or steak egg scramble -- it is slightly overpriced when looking at the amount of food on your plate. But, I can guarantee you’ll leave the restaurant with a happy stomach (but a lighter wallet).
