20 Things To Know Before You Reach Your 20s

20 Things To Know Before You Reach Your 20s
Mandi Villa de Leon

We are young, wild, and free, but soon enough we'll be going into our 20s. It's that time when you aren't treated as a kid anymore. You're expected to be mature, independent, and responsible, but yet we are all still kind of lost and going with the flow. Slowly but surely, we are learning how to become better people, towards others and to ourselves.

1. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else

Be you and embrace who you are as a person.

2. Mom and dad were always right and will always be right

If you haven’t realized yet, you will soon that parents are always right. Let’s face it, they know us better than we know ourselves.

3. No one really cares about how much you weigh, what you eat, or what size you wear

At this age, you will realize that the only person you need to satisfy and be enough for is yourself.

4. Eat the burger

Life is too short, so eat that deliciously perfect burger, aka Shake Shack. It won’t kill you.

5. Choose reading over watching Netflix

You are young, so learn and educate through literature. It will help you see the world with a different perspective, fill you with knowledge, and even make you smarter.

6. Stop caking your face with make-up

The more natural, the better.

7. Ben and Jerry will always be there for you

Ben and Jerry will be there for you through the darkest days. If a guy broke your heart, B&J will comfort you more than that stupid guy ever did.

8. Dispel toxic people from your life

Get rid of the ones who negatively criticize, bring you down, the ones who play the victim, the immature, the selfish, the manipulative and disloyal, but especially, the people who don’t value you.

9. When in doubt, slay in black

Black is the new black.

10. Time heals

Time changes you. Time makes you analyze things. Time makes you grow and mature, and even helps you see situations from another perspective. No matter what the circumstance, time helps alleviate all wounds.

11. The $40 dollar manicure isn’t worth it

We are young and in college. Let’s face it, that expensive manicure will last at least a week.

12. Stop judging others

You don’t know what others have been through and you don’t know their story, so stop judging. It will not get you far in life at all.

13. Exercise for your mental health

The older we get, the more situations we have to manage. Go exercise to relieve frustration, anger, stress, and sadness from your life.

14. Forgive, but never forget

You will find it in yourself to forgive people, people who might not deserve that forgiveness, but never forget and keep your heart guarded.

15. Trust your gut

Making a decision based on your head versus your heart can be as difficult as deciding on a Nutella crepe over an Oreo shake, so just go ahead and trust your gut.

16. Call your parents every day

Call your mom and dad and tell them about your day. A simple, short call can make their day.

17. People change

Change to become the mature, independent, better version of yourself and ignore all those who change for the worse.

18. Stop looking down at your phone and look up at the world

It’s been proven that young adults spend more than three hours on their phone every day. Try to minimize that amount and go read, explore, and learn that the world is your oyster.

19. Never skip studying for a date

A boy can wait, but your dreams can't.

20. Alone doesn’t mean lonely

We live in a society in which millions can surround you, but you can still feel lonely. It’s important to master the art of being alone and being OK with it. You will learn, grow, mature, and become this version of yourself you never thought you’d become. Most importantly, you won’t ever depend on anyone else but yourself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
