29 Ways To Make Someone's Day
Salina Patel

We are all guilty of ruining people’s day or hurting their feelings, whether it was intentional or unintentional. We should be actively aiming to make people’s days better rather than ruining them. Even on my worse days, those days that I feel like passing out because the world has just beaten me up, I make it my priority to make at least one person’s day better. Your actions--no matter how small---are extremely powerful, and in this day and age, our world needs positivity more than ever before. So why not make more positive moves than negative? Think of how much more beautiful the world could people if everyone just did random acts of kindness for each other. That is my sole purpose for making this list. I want more people to smile. More laughs. More happiness. More love. With that being said, here are some simple ways to make someone’s day.

1. Make a silly joke.

Who ever invented the “Knock-Knock jokes” should get a No-bell prize

2. Call them out of the blue just to chat (very effective if that person is your mother or grandmother).

Whenever I call my grandmother out of the blue she gets so excited to talk to me and it makes me happier hearing her excited voice.

3. Ask them how their day is going.

Simply asking someone how they are doing and what they have done in that day can take a weight of their shoulders. Sometimes all someone needs is to talk to someone.

4. Write a nice online review for a small business.

Small business is where big dreams begins. To a business owner knowing someone loves the service they are providing drives them to continue to work hard and make other people as delighted as you are. Not to mention your nice review will drive traffic to their business.

5. Take a shopping cart that was sitting in road back to the cart return.

Working at a grocery store is a much more difficult job than people think, so why not make their worker's lives easier? You'll also make shopper's lives easier by clearing the road and parking spots.

6. Compliment your friends or strangers in the sincerest way.

You love compliments so compliment other people.

7. Put an extra quarter in a vending machine for the next person.

Someone did this for me and I only had 75 cents. It was the most beautiful day ever.

8. Smile. At people passing by. At strangers. At family. At friends. At teachers. Everyone.

Everyone loves to see you smile.

9. Do a favor without being asked.

People appreciate this to the fullest extent. It might even make them cry tears of joy if you do something for them when they are afraid to ask for help.

10. Leave a large tip for your waitress.

Waitressing is hard. They have to deal with grumpy mean people all day. Be their sunshine.

11. Hold the door open for the next person.

When I have a backpack and 3 books in my hand all I want is for someone to hold the door open for me so I don't have to get abstract in my door opening strategies.

12. Tell the manager at a restaurant or a retail store how good the service was.

They want to hear they are doing something right so let them know.

13. Write someone a positive handwritten letter.

Actually, who cares if it is handwritten? Emails are good too!

14. Volunteer.

For anything and everything. It doesn’t have to be for a charity.

15. Post something nice on their Facebook wall, shout them out on instagram, send them a cute snapchat, or tweet something nice to them.

In a world where social media can be so negative, be the positive force.

16. Bring them food.

Homemade, takeout, fruit. Food is food. It will be much appreciated.

17. Hold the elevator for someone instead of clicking the close door button in hopes that they won’t make it in time.

There's no worse feeling than the elevator shutting closed on you when you are trying to make it somewhere on time.

18. Offer to pay for someone’s food (in a non condescending way).

It's kind and makes people smile because food is the way to the heart.

19. Let the person behind you in line go first especially if you aren’t in a rush.

When people do this at coffee places it fills my heart with joy because it is bringing another person so much closer to their caffeine.

20. Put change in an expired parking meter.

No one wants their car towed.

21. Tell people how much you love them.

If they are like me they will probably cry. Be ready.

22. Put money in a tip jar.

Tips are like little kisses. You should always give them to kind people.

23. Give up your seat on the bus.

People are tired and if you are able to stand, stand.

24. Tell people what they are doing right and why you admire them.

Shouldn't everyone know what they are doing right so they never stop doing those things?

25. Write a “good luck” note or an inspirational quote on the whiteboard in a study room.

College students need all the luck they can get.

26. Let people know how much you appreciate them.

Everyone should know that they mean something to you.

27. Give your loved ones a long meaningful hug.

Being wrapped in someone's arms makes the world feel much lighter.

28. Be goofy and make people laugh.

Everyone needs a laugh and if you can be the one to provide it why not?

29. Offer help to those that need it AND those that look like they have everything together.

Sometimes the people that need the most help are the ones that look like their lives are all in order.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
