28 Things Not To Do as an Insomniac

These past couple of months have been dotted with the occasional night of absolute sleeplessness. With work and school dominating your schedule, it can be difficult for any college student to have full control of their sleep cycle. Needless to say, the sand man stood me up last night. Sometimes I wonder if I brought this insomnia upon myself or if it's just my hard luck that brought it upon me. As I lay in bed for five hours, I construed a list of things that I definitely shouldn't be doing as a conditional insomniac so that you don't have to:

1. Never blame it on yourself.

2. Avoid bright screens and upbeat music before bedtime.

3. Yes, this includes skipping out on the season finale of Korra.

4. Your Reliant K and Bruno Mars playlist can wait until the morning.

5. Don't make yourself a cheese omelette unless you intend on finishing it.

6. Push aside cookies, ice cream, frozen yogurt (unless it's Wooberry ;D), or any other sugary treats, as they will only amplify your pre-jammie jitters.

7. Exhaust yourself at work if your shift ends past 10 pm!

8. I take it back. The froyo can wait until the next morning (see #6).

9. Avoid messaging your SO if they are a light sleeper and have to get up early in the morning.

10. If you really can't resist, make up for the untimely text message by sending your SO a cute GIF.

11. Make sure that GIF incorporates one of the following: penguins, animated spooky ghosts, a virtual hug, puppies dressed as cats, food with the really aesthetic and stringy cheese, Kingsley, and/or a Disney princess

12. Don't start a cleaning spree of your room, dorm, or apartment. If you are like me, you can't stop, won't stop until everything the light touches is spotless.

13. Don't reminisce in the bad times you had today. Think of the good times you'll have in a few years once you graduate! I.e., enjoying a nice cup of tea over your fireplace, where your B.S. in Engineering sits proudly.

14. Facebook stalking is for the weak.

15. Now is not the time to categorize your family photos, either.

16. Tomorrow is a busy day, but don't let yourself worry about it until 7-8 hours from now.

17. Okay, 5-6 hours from now...

18. Avoid your beloved YouTube channels for the love of all that's good and holy.

19. 3-4 hours... you monster.

20. Don't try writing quality material for your social media platform on three hours of sleep. It might go terribly wrong.

21. Don't go to a rock concert two hours away via car drive.

22. 5 am. Don't decide this is a good time to go out and buy the groceries.

23. It's September. It's too dark to go out on a run.

24. Basically, avoid the outdoors.

25. Don't try to fight back the tears, just let it all flow out, sweet child.

26. Don't stop telling yourself tomorrow will be a better day.

27. Become relieved that you're starting to feel waves of drowsiness take over.

28. Be peaceful.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
