Siblings teach you more than you think.

27 Things My Older Sister Taught Me

My sister and I are six years apart to the day. Yes, we share the same birthday and everything. In the beginning of our sister-ship, we didn’t get along. She even said on the day I was born that I was her best birthday present and her worst nightmare. Apparently, she was an intelligent and witty six-year-old.

There were too many years between us for a while. But as we both grew up, we were lucky enough to get closer and closer. Now, she is my best friend and I don’t know what I would do without her. I will never admit any of this to her in person, but over the years, she has taught me so much and given me advice which has helped to shape me into the person I am today. Here are a “few” of the million things that have stuck with me:

1. That she is an alien. I found out later on that this one was not true. I was about six years old. No, I’m still not over it.

2. Garage sale shop--you’ll save a lot of money, especially if you bargain.

3. Don’t be scared to bargain. You’re not making deals as good as they could be. Man up.

4. Never settle for ANYTHING. You deserve a lot more than you think you do.

5. Any fight can be resolved if you love someone enough.

6. When someone is driving around you horribly, never flip them off. They may actually be insane and could hurt you if you pick the wrong fight. Seriously, no matter how badly you want to flip them off, don’t do it.

7. You will, in fact, one day be proud of and laugh at the ridiculous nicknames you have been given. (Yes, I have accepted the nickname Chickenbutt, Sarah. Thanks.)

8. Neutral colors never fail. Especially with nail polish.

9. Never be mean to anyone, you never know what they are going through.

10. Be kind to strangers when they compliment you. As strange as it may get, it may have taken them A LOT of courage to say that to you.

11. It is possible to say you’re not interested in someone without being rude or harsh about it.

12. Kill them with kindness, especially if someone treats you horribly. Don’t give them the satisfaction of making you upset. It’s not worth your energy.

13. Every animal deserves to be rescued and helped. They can’t do it by themselves.

14. D.I.Y. projects aren’t as impossible as they may seem.

15. A “quick trip” to one store is never quick and usually ends up being to about 12 stores.

16. You can’t fix everything no matter how badly you may want to.

17. When someone doesn’t want to be your friend anymore out of nowhere, and for no good reason, say BYE.

18. Enjoy being young and in college. You’ll miss it later.

19. Party.

20. Dance like a fool, because it’s fun.

21. A good board game with the right people is the perfect fix for a bad week.

22. Take risks. Especially if there’s a chance for more happiness.

23. Keep your receipts.

24. Use coupons.

25. Forgive, but don’t forget.

26. Give things you don’t really need to people who do.

27.Love unconditionally, even though it hurts sometimes.

So once you get to a certain age, age between siblings doesn’t matter anymore. And honestly, you love them from day one and forever more. But be thankful for every single second you have with them. They really teach you a lot more than you could ever imagine.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
