College is a higher education. This is for sure, and I've definitely learned a lot during my first semester at Boston University. Many of those lessons came outside of the classroom. Boston is considered the biggest college town in America. It is a place for education. This is true and sometimes the city will smack you upside the head to teach you a thing or two.
Things I've learned:
1. How to cross the street
1a. When and where
2. How not to judge people
3.How to navigate the T
4. Train tracks are really hard to walk across in the rain/ snow
5. To wear walking shoes... everywhere
6. To expand my definition of walking distance from a few blocks to a few miles
7. Some professors won't like you no matter how hard you try
8. Grade deflation is a real thing
9. Being part of a team/club/activity gives you instant friends
10. Hats are great for days when you haven't showered
11. Or for bad hair days in general
12. Studying is something that actually has to be done
13. Living in a dorm isn't as exciting as you think it would be
14. How to sleep through drunk people coming home
15. The Allston crawl isn't fun
16. But it is fun to watch from your window
17. How to make it from east campus to west campus in under 10 minutes
18. Living next to a river generates a lot of wind
19.Wind makes everything 10x colder and 10x worse
20. Dunkin Donuts coffee is weaker than Starbucks coffee
21. But it's also cheaper so you'll buy it anyway
22. Dead weeks are only good in theory
23. 8ams suck even if you are a morning person
24. 8ams in another language suck even more
25. To appreciate real food
26. Colorado isn't the only place that has bipolar weather
As I reflect on this last semester, I know that I have learned much. Most of the things that will stick with me came from outside the classroom. As one semester ends and another begins, I think everyone is excited... and scared to see what life will teach us next.
