25 Things You Know To Be True If You Go To A Small University
Madison Zegarlowicz

Let's face it. You know the look your friends give you when you admit that you chose a small, private university over a state school: The look of disbelief and utter disgust, because why on earth would you go there when you could have went here?

To that, I have one reply: Comfort is a huge factor.

So maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea to attend a school where everyone (and I mean everyone) knows who you are, where your teachers actually care about your learning, and where you're not just a number. But for some, it's a pleasure to call a small university home.

Here's 25 things you know to be true if you go to a small university.

1. The student:professor ratio is crazy low

2. Because of the small class sizes, registration is cut-throat

3. Everyone (yes, everyone) knows who you are

4. You see the Dean everywhere

5. Sometimes, it feels like the campus is too small

6. Making friends is easy

7. Getting your hands on free stuff? Even easier.

8. You probably went to high school with at least one person on the campus

9. You don't know that girl that just waved to you? Oh, that's normal. Everyone waves.

10. You're probably Facebook friends with half of campus by the time your first semester ends

11. Events are a big deal because, at a small school, fun stuff that the whole campus is involved in is not an everyday thing

12. With that said, there is a huge line at every event, so you know to get there early

13. There's NEVER enough parking

14. Sporting events are almost always free for students

15. With that said, the student section will always be packed

16. You will never be "just a number"

17. You can never, easily, skip class. In your class of 12 people, it's obvious when you're missing

18. Let's be honest, the food isn't always the greatest

19. Greek Life of over 50 sororities/fraternities? LOL!

20. If you go to a local restaurant, expect to see people from campus. Every. Single. Time.

21. You're going to see your professors everywhere. Even the ones you don't like. Get used to it.

22. You have no choice but to get involved in something

23. Nothing is personal, see #3

24. Everyone always asks why you chose to go there

25. You love your school, and you wouldn't want to be anywhere else

To some, a small school is unthinkable. To you, though, a small school is home.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
