25 Tips For Incoming College Freshman

In a couple weeks, the fall semester will be starting up again, and for you incoming freshmen, college is a whole new world you're entering. I learned a lot my freshman year, and am still trying to figure out things as a junior. Here are some tips and tricks to get you through your first year.

1. Always back up your files and save constantly.

Or else you'll loose your eight-page paper you spent hours working on.

2. Do not try to fit two weeks of clothes in one load of laundry.

It's not fun doing laundry for three hours because your clothes won't dry.

3. Check your school email every day.

Checking it multiple times a day is even better.

4. Talk to people on your floor, in your classes, everywhere.

I regret being shy and not talking to as many people as I could've.

5. Flip-flops in the bathroom.

No exceptions.

6. Don't eat everything you see at the dining halls.

ThefFreshman 15 is real.

7. Don't ask people where buildings or classes are.

If it's an upperclassman, they will tell you the wrong building. There's maps, use them.

8. Get a job.

This is only if you have time. School is the most important thing, but it's always nice to have extra cash.

9. Use the resources on campus.

You're already paying for so many things in your student fees that you may not even use. Take advantage of these resources, like the rec center, tutors, and the library.

10. Talk to your professors.

It may seem scary talking to them or asking them questions, but if you really need help, they will gladly help you.

11. Take the bus, if you can.

It may seem unglamorous or weird if you're not used to public transportation, but you can save so much money on parking.

12. Keep track of your student bills and loans.

You don't want to be surprised when you get your bill.

13. Don't underestimate the value of a care packages.

Thanks, Mom!

14. Keep track of important dates.

Know when you need to register for classes and all other important dates so you're not stuck in classes you don't like.

15. Get a freaking planner!

Professors will not remind you of assignments and tests, it's up to you to keep up on your school work.

16. Make a resume.

You'll need a resume all the time, especially if you'll want to get a job or an internship eventually. It's better to have one saved for whenever you need it.

17. Take naps.

Never take the power of a nap for granted.

18. Take advantage of free food.

Colleges are always handing out free stuff, especially free food. Take advantage of everything.

19. Go to events.

You can meet new people and make connections with professors or employers that can help you in the future.

20. Student discounts!

A lot of places have student discounts. The app Rovertown has a bunch of deals in your college town.

21. Take the trash out, already.

I don't know what it is about college kids, but we really hate taking the trash out. We stack and stuff garbage until we can't anymore. Just take it out already.

22. Don't buy coffee every day.

Coffee does add up. You don't need it every day, and if you do, then make your own.

23. Rent your books!

You do not need to buy your books! I repeat, you do not need to buy your books! You can rent them for much cheaper, and a lot of the time you don't need them at all, or can check them out at the library.

24. Don't drink too much.

Everyone wants to have fun at college, but make sure your school work and responsibilities always come first.

25. Go to class!

It's very easy to skip class in college. But if you do it often, you'll fall far behind.

Good luck, freshmen! Have a great first year!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
