25 Thoughts We All Probably Had When Scheduling Classes

Can't someone else do this for me?

25 Thoughts We All Probably Had When Scheduling Classes
Know Your Meme

Ah, finally. College is notorious for finally being the time at which students are able to have some freedom in choosing what they'd like to study and when. They have longed for the time when they would be able to go off to college and pick the classes they want, the ones they don't and the times of each. Dreams of no Monday or Friday classes flicker past each mind and the notion of no classes earlier than 11am is enough to make some delirious with happiness.

It's gratifying: after 12 years in the traditional American school system where each day was rigidly structured for anywhere between 6 to 8 hours a day, now us students are the ones who take the reins and have a shot at asserting our independence by picking what we want to take! Yeah! No Friday classes, 'cause why not? No Monday classes, 'cause I don't want to have any! No classes before 11am 'cause I've been getting up at the break of dawn since I was in diapers. This is my time to shine.

Oh, I wish it were that easy. If it were, students would love college even more so. Unfortunately, the power really isn't all in our hands-- almost at all really. From getting the luck of the draw with an early orientation date (where you officially enroll for classes) to having to skillfully master the art of having 10 tabs open (to ensure a schedule builder, degree navigator and so much more be easily accessible), here are 25 thoughts we all probably had while on the path to scheduling classes!

1. What the heck is AOP?

2. Is that another mandated online survey that I'll coast through?

3. Oh dope, it's actually orientation! That sounds pretty cool.

4. Yeah, I'll pick a date that's right in the middle, don't want to look like a try-hard.

5. Wait, you mean the earlier dates get first dibs on classes?

6. Shoot, let me try to switch.

7. Ok, they're all taken. It's fine, it's fine.

8. Hmm I got this brochure saying I should look at these sites before AOP. Hah.

9. How do I use Degree Nav?

10. I'll skip that for now.

11. Scheduling courses sound fun, I'll go look at them.

12. So I guess I do need to know which classes I need. Back to Degree Nav..

13. Cool, so I guess I just need 4 classes this semester!

14. No 8am's for me, no thank you!

15. But the one class I need is only offered at 8am. Shoot.

16. Well, maybe it won't be so bad.

17. Yeah I'll sign up for it, why not.

18. Bam! All done!

19. Wait how long does it take to get across campus again?

20. Dang, let me just see if this is offered at noon instead.

21. Oh it's only offered at 6pm Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays..

22. Maybe I'll change a different class.

23. I'll refresh the page, I haven't in about a minute.

24. How the heck did 3 of my classes become full? It's literally been a minute.

25. Can I change my major?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
