25 Things I Miss About My Childhood
Odyssey

Looking back at my life, there are tons of things that I miss about my childhood that I had never thought were a big deal at the time. When we were young, our biggest job was to be a kid. We had fun, we met some our friends that we still know to this day, we started making habits that we still have today. Out of nostalgia, I have decided to list as many things that I could think of that I miss about my childhood, and I'm sure you can relate with at least a few of them.

1. Making Hop Scotch games on the driveway

If you wanted to start over, you could just spray down the sidewalk or driveway and once it dried you were ready to draw again!

2. Biking around the neighborhood

Now if we want to cruise around in our cars, we have to make sure we have enough gas, and enough money to get more gas.

3. The old Disney Channel

The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, That's So Raven, Kim Possible, Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverley Place, Sister Sister, and tons more that I can't even think of.

4. The old Nickelodeon

Drake & Josh, iCarly, Jimmy Neutron, Lizzie McGuire, The Fairly Oddparents, Hey Arnold, and many more.

5. The ice cream truck

That song meant that heaven on earth was just around the corner for us kids.

6. The tooth fairy

Now we all have our boring adult teeth and we don't get to find money under our pillows anymore.

7. Santa Claus bringing presents

The minute I decided I was "too old" to believe in Santa Claus, the presents from Santa disappeared! It's like he knew...

8. Getting to see kids movies without any odd looks from people

Finding Dory is coming out and you think that I'm not going to go see that in theaters?

9. Everything was an adventure

Mom wants us to come with her to the grocery store? Sure, that means we get to see the billions of aisles that look never-ending because of our smallness.

10. We didn't have to worry about politics

"Well, my dad's a democrat, so I guess I am too. What's a democrat, you ask? How should I know, I'm only four!"

11. Our job included doing chores and playing with friends

$5 a week to keep my room clean and make sure to help with dishes and the trash? I don't have to deal with going through an interview process because my parents just want the help? Even better, I got the job because I was born!

12. Recess

That slotted time in our day of school where we were required to be outside and running around should not just be in elementary, but unfortunately it is.

13. Blockbuster

You know that old place where you could go get any movie at any time because Netflix wasn't online yet? Yeah, I miss it, too.

14. Parents making all our meals

We didn't have to eat ramen most of the time as kids because our parents actually know how to cook!

15. Candy was the only drug any of us were addicted to

As kids, we didn't know what "drugs" were. Now, most of us know someone that's addicted to something. I must confess that I am still addicted to candy.

16. Girls could be topless too when we were all little.

As a little kid everyone had a flat chest! It was fantastic!

17. The worst punishments we would get were "go to your room" or "no TV for a week"

The worst crime I did when I was little was drawing on the walls. Now, I know people who could go to jail, or are in jail, because of the crimes that happen in adulthood.

18. The kids table at Thanksgiving

Remember that little table that everyone says they don't want to sit at but when you leave you see everyone laughing and having fun and you miss it? Yeah, you're not the only one.

19. Boys had cooties

"Ew, Sally kissed Jacob? But that's so icky!"

20. Nap time

I now have to plan for my own nap time if I want to take a nap during the day.

21. The kids section at clothing stores

The kids section always had the cutest clothes, and now I'm too big to fit in any of their stuff!

22. There wasn't a "popular crowd" at school

I don't know about all of us, but I know I didn't really see a specific "popular" group in elementary school. Sure, people started hanging out with certain kids more than others, but I don't remember any of them trying to say they were better than any other kids.

23. Homework was a LOT easier in elementary school

It was so easy to get an A++ on tests, but now we're expected to know ten times more! I miss my A++'s

24. We didn't have to pay for things ourselves

Our parents always bought us food and such. We could save up our allowance if we wanted something bigger, but in general we didn't have to worry about money and it was wonderful.

25. The world was so big

We were so little, everything else was so big. Now everything looks so much smaller than they used to, even our parents and our pets.

Being a kid was so easy, and sometimes I wish I could go back in time and stay a kid forever. However, I do know that some things that I miss are actually not terrible now even though they're different. If my friends call me at one in the morning and want McDonald's fries, I don't have to ask my parents for permission, and I have my own car to be able to drive myself. There are tons of things I miss about my childhood, but I'm excited to be an adult, too. Do you feel the same way?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
