22 Empowering Break Up Songs That Will Help You Move Forward
Alice Moore

Bad breakups are something every girl in her 20's is familiar with. It can be easy to succumb to the wallowing and devastation. However, it's never the end of the world. You have an amazing future ahead of you that doesn't rely on the company or support of a mediocre man. Now is not the time to waste your time. You're young, independent, and in your prime. Your focus should be on personal and career growth. Here are 14 songs for every situation that will keep your mind on moving forward and remind you of the amazing woman you are. I hope you like Beyonce!

1. "New Rules" by Dua Lipa

The mega-hit by 2017 break-out star Dua Lipa. If you haven't listened to her music, I highly recommend you do. This song is a stern reminder not to answer at the 4 am "wyd" text.

2. "Big Girls Don't Cry (Personal)" by Fergie

You probably belted out this 00's anthem when you were a kid without really absorbing the message. This song is must-listen for any girl in a serious relationship in her 20's. If you found you lost yourself in love, it's a ballad about finding yourself outside of that stifling relationship. If you're feeling extra nostalgic, you can listen to the Kidz Bop version.

3. "No Scrubs" by TLC

Before we called them "fuckboys," we called them "scrubs." This song is an affirmation of your standards. That man who broke your heart wasn't good enough for you.

4. "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood

Secretly, we all indulge ourselves in the occasional country song. In a genre that boasts masculinity and puts women on a pedestal, Carrie Underwood is my guilty pleasure. This is a power anthem for the bitter and betrayed. You are not a woman to be trifled with.

5. "Fuck You" by Lilly Allen

Pay attention more to the title of this song than its chipper tune. Here is a song to validate you when you finally reach that state of "idgaf" bliss.

6. "Pretty Girl Rock" by Keri Hilson

This is my go-to song when I'm feeling myself because I look a little thick in my new jeans. Keri Hilson reminds us we are desirable, and we should never feel like anything less.

7. "Cry Me A River" by Justin Timberlake

Stay Strong. When he tries to come crawling back or make you feel sorry for him, recite the title.

8. "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor

This is a break-up song that has stood the test of time. No doubt you've heard it a hundred times, and know lyrics to at least the first verse. This 70's disco power anthem is perfect to belt out when you're drunk and feeling down. Maybe with some friends!

9. "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield

This song isn't about a breakup, and that's good! Focus on the future, not the past. This is Natasha Bedingfield's affirmation that you have your whole life, that is both beautiful and completely unknown, ahead.

10. "Potential Break Up Song" by Ally & AJ

Extremely auto-tuned, but a bop nonetheless. This is for the girl that holds the same nostalgia for Radio Disney as me.

11. "Leave The Pieces" by The Wreckers

This is my second absolute favorite and another indulgence in the country genre. The Wreckers encourage you to kick the indecisive man who keeps hurting you to the curb. Both he and you need to know you'll be fine without him.

12. "Gives You Hell" by The All-Amercian Rejects

When I think of 00's music, The All-Amercian Rejects are the first band to come to mind. They're far from A-list, but iconic nonetheless. This song is to hoping your face haunts your ex. They should be the one avoiding you in public.

13. "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce

The Queen speaks. Do not let a bitter man manipulate you into thinking you are less than you are. A woman like you can and will find someone better than that.

14. "Feelin' Myself" by Nicki Minaj, Beyonce

Two Queens speak. Put this song on the aux during the post-breakup Girl's Night Out.

15. "Bye Bye Bye" by N'SYNC

The title is self-explanatory.

16. "Run The World (Girls)" by Beyonce

My first act as President? Making this our country's anthem. Girl power has never been more on the rise. Beyonce's anthem reminds who can and will be in charge. Take this message of empowerment to heart.

17. "Bubblegum Bitch" by Marina and The Diamonds

"I'll chew up and I'll spit you out because that's what young love is all about." I recommend all of Marina's music about being shallow, sad, and playing with men's emotions. This song is about the ephemeralness of love, and playing the field.

18. "Survivor" by Destiny's Child

The song Destiny's Child wowed the world with. This song is a reminder you are resilient and will persevere through this struggle

19. "Sorry" by Beyonce

Beyonce stopped the world once again when she dropped "Lemonade," and made women who didn't even have a man want to leave their man. Take the same message to this. Go out, have fun. You don't need him. Whether you hurt him or he hurt you, you do not need to feel apologetic.

20. "Hold Up" by Beyonce

So, you poured your heart and soul out into loving your man, and now you want to smash things in with a bat. You're in the angry state of grief. We've all been there.

21. "Don't Hurt Yourself" by Beyonce

A man who plays you plays himself.

22. "Tears" by Clean Bandit ft. Louisa Johnson

Last but not least, my absolute favorite break up song. This song is powerful and emotional. It gets me in my feelings every time. However, overall, it conveys the message of perseverance.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
