Chivalry isn’t dead, but it is harder to come by. Maybe expectations have lowered, or the rise of independent women has scared it away, but it is something that should be more prominent every day. Men: just because she doesn’t ask for these things, it doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t put a smile on her face. Women: just because you are independent, strong, and perfectly capable of taking care of yourself, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't let someone show you how much they care for you. Here are a few chivalrous acts that are a little old fashioned but romantic, nonetheless, and need to make a comeback.
1. Holding open the door for someone, especially when his or her hands are full or are not as physically fit as you (injured, pregnant, elderly).
2. Calling a woman to ask her on a date instead of texting her.
3. Giving her your coat when she’s cold and making sure she’s warm for the walk home or to the car.
4. Pulling out a woman’s chair.
This isn’t something that needs to happen on every date, but if it’s ever convenient it is greatly appreciated and it adds a little something extra.
5. Sharing your umbrella, even if that means you get wet for a few seconds.
6. Bringing her flowers, just because you love her (with or without a special occasion).
7. Standing up for her, but only if she needs it.
It’s always nice to have someone on your side, but stand back and let her handle it if she’s able.
8. Asking her to dance.
I don’t know why but there’s something about it that just floods a girl’s heart.
9. Leaving little notes around for her to find (in her coat pocket, on the mirror in the bathroom, somewhere completely unexpected) that simply show that you’re thinking of her.
10. Getting to know her parents and taking the time to earn their trust and approval.
11. Complimenting and being nice to her friends in a sincere and not weird way.
This is a demonstration of kindness that few men show.
12. Walking on the street-side of the sidewalk.
I’m not really sure why but my dad’s always told me that it’s a sign of protection and that any good man knows to do this.
13. Dropping her off first if you have to park far away.
14. Going up to the door and knocking when you’re picking her up for a date instead of just texting her saying, “here.”
15. Sending a little message to make sure she got home all right.
16. Maintaining a certain level of privacy in the relationship.
It’s good to be open with friends but it’s better to understand what should be kept between the two of you.
17. Sticking to your word whenever possible.
18. Being kind and respectful to everyone you encounter – servers, cashiers, the guy walking past you on the sidewalk.
It’s become a thing to voice all thoughts and feelings but it is important to remember, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
19. Taking off your hat when you first meet someone or if the occasion calls for it.
If she loves you, she won’t mind your hat hair so don’t worry.
20. Remembering special days.
21. Telling her you love her with no expectations, just because it’s true.
22. Realizing that these things are not “old fashioned” or “outdated,” and that making your significant other feel good is something that is timeless.
Oh, and women -- remember that you can do some of these things, too.
