21 Things I Learned While 21

You live, you learn, you grow.

21 Things I Learned While 21

You learn a lot in college. Most of it doesn't have anything to do with your major. It's about life. About yourself. You gain friends, you lose friends. You'll fall in and out of love. You'll be stressed and probably take a lot of naps.

And, you'll probably turn 21 while you're there.

Being 21 was shitty, to put it honestly. A lot happened to me. I made a lot of stupid mistakes. But, I learned a lot about who I am and who I'm supposed to be.

1. Your best friend will betray you.

They'll share a secret that wasn't theirs to tell and damage will be done. A lot of damage will be done.

2. It's okay if you gain weight from all the beer and whiskey.

You just turned 21; anyone that doesn't gain a little weight from the alcohol has some amazing self control. The voice in your head doesn't have any control anymore.

3. Someone that constantly makes new facebook accounts and twitter accounts to talk to you needs to be reported.

Not just to those campus police. A restraining order needed to be served two years before.

4. If you have a passion, pursue it with full force.

Your stories now may suck, but the novel you'll write one day will be amazing.

5. Being blunt will always be the best option.

But of course, be respectful of people's feelings.

6. Some girls really don't grow up.

If they were supposed to, they would have by now.

7. If they want to be in your life, they will be.

Don't chase after someone that doesn't care enough to be around. It'll save you trouble in the end.

8. That boy from high school? Stay away from him.

Some things are better left to the imagination.

9. Being open with your struggles will help others.

They'll reach out and you'll make new friends. You'll help each other out.

10. There are those friends that say they'll be there, but won't.

If you're reading this, I hope you know who you are. Maybe if I had a dick you'd be there for me.

11. You can rock that dark lipstick, all you have to do is own it.

Really.

12. Everyone is going to get engaged, and you won't.

Ring before spring is the biggest load of shit that I've heard of.

13. ...Carrie Bradshaw didn't get married until she was in her 40's.

She turned out pretty fine. You will too.

14. It's okay if you don't graduate on time.

Who really wants to be in the real world that bad?

15. Getting over someone really isn't as easy as getting under someone else.

That my friends, is false advertising.

16. No one can actually see your scars.

Those little white lines are basically invisible to everyone but you.

17. Being transparent is going to help people understand.

No one knows what's going on in your head, let them know.

18. College is always going to be there.

Don't be afraid to take as much time off as you need.

19. The past may be in the past, but it can still hurt.

But it makes everyone stronger. Your future self will thank you.

20. Staying at home on a Friday night is fine.

So is going out. You can make great memories both ways.

21. Sometimes, home isn't four walls and some furniture.

Sometimes, it's a city with three rivers and a lot of bridges.

And one thing I've learned in the four months of being 22.

22. There's going to be a guy in a bar.

You won't know what to do when you start falling for him, after saying you don't want a relationship.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
