21: The Year of Firsts

I don't know why I haven't been camping, and I can't imagine going again.

I have vowed to myself, being the adventurous person that I am, to try new things this summer. It shall be the summer of firsts. I know. I’m a child and a lot of the things on my list are events or tasks that many people have done as a child but there are more people than I thought that, like me are over the age of 20 and haven’t. Things such as camping and riding a bike. Yes, laugh at me, I dare you.

Any who, the recent excursion that I have completed is camping. If you know anything about my personality, you would know that I am an exclusively indoors person. It was a fantastic learning experience, but I still cannot understand why anyone would do it for fun. Now I probably went camping on one of the worst weekends of the year. Advice: Check the weather! It rained pretty much the entire weekend. This meant no cooking, no playing in the river, no meeting people and all of this for me equaled no fun.

Besides the fact that it rained the whole weekend, it was also a small festival for a Grateful Dead cover band. All of which, in the right weather circumstances, I would have been all about. However, this weekend all my pampered ass was thinking was “How can these freaking hippies be this freaking happy all the damn time.” I’m a little cynical and all I wanted was some families to argue just a little. All I got was a constant asking of what my zodiac sign was and if my camp had extra beer. Coming from Rolla, these were both weird questions. A place where more than half of campus could give less than half a thought about the zodiac and asking others for alcohol is out of the question for the most part. It didn’t help much that I had gotten super into watching a Charles Manson centered TV show less than three days before hand. Advice: The Grateful Dead is more of a lifestyle than a concert. If you don’t know what you are getting yourself into you most likely will not enjoy.

In all it was a decent weekend. Will I go camping again… It truly depends. I’ve been told that August and September are better months of the year to adventure out with camping. I know it was not actual camping and there were bathrooms with running water but I think that’s about all I can handle for the time being. Conclusion: I currently hate camping.

However, I do greatly appreciate my bed and warm food now. I would never plan a trip on my own. I’m not completely against going again but not in the foreseeable future. I think I will stick to my sloth status of being for a while.

In the future I hope to take on riding a bicycle… I guess we shall see how that one goes for the future. Wish me luck on my endeavors.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
