2016: A Year In Movies & Music

We lost a lot and gained a lot. Through it all, we had music to listen to and movies to watch.

2016: A Year In Movies & Music

2016 was a year to remember, without a doubt. We saw our favorite stars rise and others fall. New music came out and old songs refreshed our memories of the past. New films entertained us and we gathered around the TV to watch our favorite classics. It gave us some things to celebrate. It also took things from us, and we have had to grieve for those losses.

It is hard when people leave our lives, there is no denying that. When those people are celebrities, that loss is felt by the industry they belonged to and their adoring fans. Many people actually claim they hate 2016 because of who it took from us. The loss of Carrie Fisher, famous for her role as Princess Leia not only impacted fans of 'Star Wars', but also the mental health community. Legendary performer Prince passed away this year and was even honored with his own memorial concert. Both icons would probably be surprised to see themselves represented in a Snapchat filter. These were just two memorable artists whose loss has already impacted the world.

This year, movies such as Finding Dory made a splash at the box office. We welcomed Moana, a new Disney princess. Old characters were re-imagined in Suicide Squad. We laughed at The Secret Life of Pets and were frightened by The Purge: Election Year. It was a big year for movies. doing away with Hollywood norms seemed to be an ever-present theme.

On a lighter note, 2016 brought with it new music. Ariana Grande released her hit album 'Dangerous Woman' and The Weeknd teamed up with DaftPunk to bring us 'Starboy". Along with new music comes concerts. Beyonce's Formation Tour and Adele's Tour for her third album were greeted by high sales. Selena Gomez brought her talent to the Revival Tour which had 58 different performances. Kanye West toured and had a memorable show with a floating stage.

2016 was a great year. Yes, many people passed away, but their memory will live on in their work and perhaps will be honored with new pieces of music and perhaps movies. I hope 2017 brings new talents and fantastic music and film for us to enjoy.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
