President Obama stood in front of the Congress for the final time to give his State of the Union address on Tuesday. Instead of laying out a wish list for the year ahead, Obama went back to the well of “hope and change” for the future that got him elected in 2008. Here are a few of my notes about the speech, things that stuck out to me, and other random nuggets.
First and foremost, Paul Ryan is everything I could ever want in a Republican Speaker of the House serving under a Democratic Presidential administration. He seemed at some points to be holding back laughter and at other points just seemed like he could care less what President Obama was saying.
This was a political stunt, no doubt about it. President Obama littered this speech with his own political beliefs. He reiterated his hope to make college cheaper. While large universities will probably remain unaffected, community colleges across the country could be forced to provide two free years of education to students. I just can’t see how this would be a good change to make.
He gave himself a pat on the back in a couple different instances. In talking about the equal wedding rights of homosexual couples, when speaking of vanquishing America’s enemies, and reminding us that he killed Osama Bin Laden, and speaking of the TPP. The nuns in the crowd confused me, but whatever.
Overall, I obviously didn’t agree with most of what President Obama said and that’s one of the most important factors in the American political system. I can disagree with everything the most powerful man in the world says, but at the end of the day, he is my representative and I must respect him as such.
War Eagle, y’all.
