2016 Rio Olympics: Objectification, Sexism, Racism and Body-Shaming?

The event of the 2016 Olympics in Rio have been sweeping every media circuit for months. The Rio Olympics have been something people have been talking about since the city was chosen, and throughout their issues with Zika virus it has become even more of a big talking point. Like everything else that is constantly going on in this world, society had gone through social media to express their thoughts and opinions - good or bad, nice or mean. What's shocking is that comments from both Olympic contestants and the general public have been filled with racism, body shaming, and objectification of the contestants. And unfortunately, I don't see it ending any time soon.

An Italian gymnast was stated saying "maybe we should paint our bodies black next time so that we actually have a shot at winning."

Thousands of people on Twitter and other social media outlets have been posting unnecessary and nasty comments about a Mexican gymnast's body image after watching her compete in her Olympic events of artistic gymnastics.

The world is making a big deal about the fact that Olympic gold medalist in swimming Dana Vollmer had a baby just over one year ago.

Millions of people, including different media outlets and online article databases have been lusting after the Olympians for nothing but their physical looks, making objectifying comments about their bodies in the particular uniforms used for their competitions.

Olympic trap shooter Corey Cogdell was reduce to being announced as a "wife of a lineman" instead of being commended for her bronze medal performance.

The majority of those watching the live coverage of the 2016 Opening Ceremony for the Olympics were more focused on the looks of the participants than what the event is actually about.

Does anyone else see a major issue with these instances?

These events of criticism with these personality traits have been increasing by the day. Within the short twenty four hours that I started working on this article by the time I am finishing it now, I had to add three new instances of sexism alone into this short article. The number of these instances is growing by the minute, basically every minute that there is an Olympic event being played on any television screen and beyond. Sadly, I believe that these instances are only going to grow more frequent as the Olympic Games continues through the next few weeks.

The Olympics are a special event; one which should be about the world coming together for fierce competition and unity. Summer Olympics are covered from end to end every four years, through every media platform that covers what the world is wondering and wanting to know. Countries are supposed to be coming together to support their participants. Spectators are supposed to be supporting these high level athletes chasing their dreams. Though it is a competition, the athletes should be supporting their competitors and congratulating them on their win - even if they're suffering from a case of being a sore loser. But as time goes on and new Olympic Games come to play, the general population seems to favor paying attention to the superficial aspects of the most popular athletic event in the world.

Why has this special world event been deduced to some of the most corrupt and disgusting flaws in the history of human personalities? Instead of criticizing their outer appearance and making vulgar comments regarding their sex and private lives, the millions of viewers watching the Olympic events should be supporting these incredibly high level athletes fighting for their dreams. What these athletes are doing is nothing less than amazing, and we should be rooting them on throughout their athletic ventures.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
