It was the third day of November and I was headed over to Starbucks to meet up with a friend to study. As I arrived I was ecstatic to see that there were red Starbucks cups! The annual red cups at Starbucks have always just been another thing that I get excited about during the holiday season. I mean, winter is the most wonderful time of the year, right?
But who knew someone’s winter could be ruined over a simple red cup. The latest simple design that Starbucks has come out with has managed to cause a great controversy.
The complaints on these so called, ‘way too boring and plain,’ red Starbucks cup are getting out of control. People all over social media are posting things with the sarcastic hashtag, “Merry Christmas Starbucks.”
Not only has it angered regular Starbucks customers, but with the presidential election coming up, Donald Trump is also reacting to this as well. On Monday, November 3, as Donald Trump was giving his speech in Springfield, Illinois, he said, “Maybe we should boycott Starbucks.”
It is unbelievable that the source of all this complete and unnecessary outrage has managed to emerge from a Starbuck’s cup.
To make matters even worse, former pastor, Joshua Feuerstein, is claiming that Starbucks hates Jesus. Apparently Starbucks is taking the Christmas out of Christmas this year. Last time I checked, Starbucks isn’t a Christian company that was obligated to embrace the Christmas culture in any specific way. Plus, the Vice President for design at Starbuck’s argues that they were trying to embrace simplicity and quietness of how, as he states, “Starbucks has become a place of sanctuary during the holidays.”
Whatever the case, it’s clear that this year’s red Starbucks cup has caused quite the uproar. It’s funny how this time of the year is supposed to revolve around peace and love, yet everyone seems to be doing the exact opposite with the way they’re reacting to the newly released red Starbucks cup.
The real question is, why are we letting a cup, that we drink our favorite caffeinated beverage from, get in the way of our holiday spirit? If this is really what our generation had come to, we shouldn’t be proud of it. People shouldn’t be coming to such drastic conclusions over a Starbucks cup that meant no hard feelings at all in the first place.
