This years MTV VMA's was quite tame compared to past years. Even though there wasn't a Britney and Madonna kiss or Miley Cyrus twerking episode, the performances were very entertaining.
The biggest drama started before the VMAs, when Surge Knight got shot six times at Chris Brown's pre-VMA party. Also before the show, one of Nicki Minaj's dancers got bit by a six foot long boa constrictor. Needless to say, there were no snakes in her epic performance of Anaconda. The winners of this year video music awards were:
- Best Female Video: Katy Perry, "Dark Horse"
- Best Male Video: Ed Sheeran, "Sing"
- Best Pop Video: Ariana Grande, "Problem"
- Best Hip-Hop Video: Drake, "Hold on, We are Going Home"
- Best Rock Video: Lorde, "Royals"
- Artist to Watch: Fifth Harmony, "Miss Movin' on"
- Video of the Year: Miley Cyrus, "Wrecking Ball"
The best performance of the night was hands-down Beyonce. She sang a medley of songs from her new album in a 15 minute performance. The crowd was won over once Jay-Z and Blue Ivy came on stage to present her with Michael Jackson's Video Vanguard Award. Queen B was also nominated for the most Moon Men awards (8).
Other performances included Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Jessie J, Sam Smith, 5 seconds of Summer, Maroon 5, Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora. This VMA year was unique in which it included several dedications. Artist, Common, talked about the pressing issues in Ferguson, Missouri and he gave a moment of silence for the death of Mike Brown. There was also a video dedicated to Robin Williams. Another inspiring event occurred when Miley Cyrus won the video of the year for "Wrecking Ball". A homeless man accepted the award for the, "homeless youths of the United States". He discussed his struggles of being a homeless youth in the area and launched Miley Cyrus' campaign to stop youth homelessness. The acceptance was very emotional and Cyrus was crying as she watched Jesse give her acceptance speech.
All in all, the 2014 VMA's was one to watch. Beyonce sneezed on the beat, and the beat got sicker, while Tay Swift looked awkward per usual. If you didn't catch the award shows last night, I suggest you get to a computer right now!
