20 Things Your Server Wishes You Knew
Benchmark Restaurant

After three years in a restaurant, in five different positions, I have had just about every customer experience imaginable. Plenty of people seem oblivious to restaurant etiquette, otherwise known as manners. Below is a list of common things your server wishes you knew.

Disclaimer: most customers are kind and considerate. They are very much appreciated and are not annoying in the slightest. If you are one of these customers, feel free to disregard most of the things on this list.

1. I have little to no control over the speed at which your food is prepared.

2. You need to speak up. It is loud and busy and you have a complicated order. Speak loudly.

3. While tipping is technically optional, it is expected.

4. Don’t let your child run around the restaurant. People are carrying heavy, hot plates, and we don’t want them to spill on your child.

5. If you’re in a rush, tell us soon. Especially if it is busy. Otherwise, I will give you time to relax, like I’m supposed to.

6. Allow the other members of the party to order for themselves. I have questions for them about how they want it.

7. Tell me if you need something or something is wrong, rather than getting angry about it after the meal.

8. Your substitutions are not annoying. I’m used to it. Don’t worry. Really.

9. I don’t cook or make drinks. So while you may have carefully explained it to me, and I have carefully explained it to the kitchen. It sometimes turns into a game of telephone, and it is not exactly what you wanted.

10. I am not annoyed that it is busy. It’s fine, I promise.

11. I don’t make the prices.

12. If you write a review and use my name, I love you.

13. We have a lot of customers, so I can’t change the temperature in the restaurant just because you are hot or cold.

14. If you have an allergy, tell me immediately.

15. If you order more food after your original order was placed, they will not come out at the same time. Food is made in the order it is placed. Unless it is dead, you will get it later.

16. Don’t ask for something while I’m with another table.

17. Don’t write mean things on your check if you had a bad time.

18. Don’t sit there for hours after you finish eating.

19. Don’t sarcastically clap when a cup breaks.

20. It is okay to say that you don’t like what you ordered. I will fix it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
