20 Things You Experience With Reverse Culture Shock

It's a real thing, just like when you first arrived abroad.

It is the end of your amazing, once in a lifetime experience study abroad semester. You vow to never forget the people, the amazing food or the scenery. You are confident you will remember pieces of the language to sound sophisticated at home (although, this probably won't happen.) This is when you realize that you have adapted to the culture of your study abroad country. When you first arrived, you were probably a little shocked and scared, and it took you a little while to get used to the different food, the handheld showers or maybe the fact that you had to turn on the electricity when you wanted to use it. At first, it felt foreign and crazy, and you wondered what you were getting yourself into. However, after a while, it started to feel like home. Here are 20 symptoms of reverse culture shock.

1. You return to home to the U.S., and are shocked at the sheer amount of food chains, fast food restaurants, shopping malls and industrial stores surrounding you.

2. You eat the food you have been craving for a whole semester, but somehow, you still miss the food back in your host country.

3. You can't get used to everyone speaking English around you and everyone understanding everything you say.

4. You remember how expensive everything is at home.

5. You remember the strictness of the 21+ drinking age, whether or not you are 21.

6. You realize that unlike in your host country, there is limited public transportation, and you probably have to drive everywhere again.

7. You miss the club scene that much of the U.S. just doesn't have, outside of the big cities.

8. You miss how easy it was to get around and visit different places while you were abroad, and how cheap it probably was.

9. There is definitely a food you are craving from abroad that you can't find anywhere at home, and don't know how to make.

10. You miss the clubs and bars being open all night until 7 a.m.

11. You think about the street food that was available on every corner.

12. You miss the foreign currency exchange rate.

13. You aren't used to having so many things to watch on American Netflix, and you might go a little crazy.

14. You reunite with all your friends, but they can't share in your amazing experiences you had with your study abroad friends, and they don't want to hear about all of them.

15. You see your family and pets again, and realize how different your home is from houses abroad.

16. You quickly become bored at home, without the plethora of exotic clubs, hookah bars, cheap authentic restaurants or trips that you had available abroad.

17. You probably miss the laid-back work and school culture compared to the hustle and bustle of the U.S.

18. You readapt to being diligent in your work at your summer job, or at school for the second semester.

19. You remember your grades actually count toward your GPA again, and have to put in more effort in school.

20. You eventually start readapting to America, but things are different than before you left, and you are changed for the better.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
