20 Things I Wish I Could Tell My Freshman Self

Because unlike your new IKEA furniture, college doesn't come with an instruction manual.

20 Things I Wish I Could Tell My Freshman Self

1. DO NOT WEAR YOUR LANYARD AROUND CAMPUS!!!

I never did this, but I definitely saw people who did. I am telling you now that if you wear your lanyard around your neck, you are putting a target on your back that says "HI! I AM A FRESHMAN! Whats your major?"

2. While you are at it, STOP ASKING PEOPLE WHAT THEIR MAJOR IS!

I'm 100% serious. This is something that EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM will ask you, and it gets extremely annoying after a while. Also, chances are 99.9% of the people you ask are just like you and have no idea what the heck they want to do with their lives.

3. There is no shame in taking that class for an easy "A."

College is all about balance. You don't need to fill your schedule with 18 credits of death! Balance out your really difficult classes with a super easy one that you might actually enjoy.

4. Sitting in your dorm room alone with the door open DOES NOT mean you are being social.

Believe it or not, I actually thought I was trying when to make friends when I would do this. I was like, "Alicia! Give yourself a pat on that pack. Look at you trying to make friends! YOU GO GIRL!!"

Let me just let you in on a little secret: this is not an effective method if you actually want to have friends. Instead, try talking to people in your classes or joining different activities.

5. Once you make friends, don't stop making friends.

However, don't force yourself on people. Not everyone is going to like you, and that is okay!

6. Who you hang out with in college doesn't matter like it did in high school.

Also, no one cares how popular you were in high school so you should probably just not talk about it...

Do this:

And people might respond with this:

I'm just kidding. They probably won't do that...

7. Don't change who you are to try and fit in.

College is a big place filled with a lot of different kinds of people. You WILL find a group of friends who are just like you.

8. Greek life isn't everything.

Don't judge people based on the letters they do or do not wear. Get to know them before you judge them.

9. Don't drop your friends when you join a sorority or a fraternity.

Your sorority is great, but don't let it be the only things that defines you. You are allowed to be friends with people in other sororities/fraternities/organizations. #GREEKUNITY

10. You don't need to be BFFs with your roommate, but you should probably try to be civilized.

They might be annoying, rude, or completely nuts, but try your hardest to make the best of the situation.

11. Find your classes before the first day of class.

Do you want to be that kid that walks into four other classes before they finally show up 30 minutes late to the one they are actually supposed to be in? The answer to that question is NO, you don't. So find your classes beforehand and avoid all awkwardness that could possibly ensue otherwise.

12. You DO NOT need to look put together at your 8 a.m. class.

To be honest with you, most of the people in your class probably rolled out of bed 20 minutes ago and spent more time eating breakfast than they did getting ready for class.

13. You do need that $400 textbook.

Yes, spending that much money on a book sucks big time, but when test time rolls around and no one in your class wants to share theirs with you, you are going to wish you spent the money.

14. Get to know your professors and make sure you talk in class.

I understand that right now you are 18 years old and the real world seems very far away, but eventually you are going to need letters of recommendation. Your profs can't write you a letter if you never said anything.

15. Midterm grades don't matter.

They don't go on permanent records, they are just an indication of your progress halfway through the semester. For instance, if you have a "D-" at midterms that might indicate that you should spend a little less time at the bars and a little more time in the library.

16. It's okay to cry yourself to sleep sometimes.

Maybe you miss your dog, or your friends, or your mom. It's okay, just let it all out!

17. Dead week is a thing.

There is a reason it is called dead week. This is NOT the time to start a new TV show on Netflix. This is your time to get stuff done so USE IT! I speak from experience when I say that starting your final paper at 2 a.m. when it is due at 8 a.m. is not the best idea.

18. Finals are as hard as you think they are going to be.

Study for your final exams. Your professors are not lying to you when they say you should start studying a few weeks before the test. Your exams will be hard, and cramming the night before probably won't cut it.

19. Don't get comfortable.

This is your time to push yourself to try new things and meet new people. Get uncomfortable. Push your boundaries. Do things that you thought you would never do (Except hard drugs. Don't do that...).

20. It's not as scary as you think it's going to be.

Relax and take a deep breath. You are going to be just fine. Sometimes is going to be a bit rough. When it is, find comfort in the fact that there are thousands of other almost-adults who feel the same way that you do.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
