20 Things Every Girl Should Learn By 20

Don't let life slap you in the face.

So, I'm halfway through my 20th year of life.

I've learned a lot of things (and have a really long way to go), figured out some life hacks, and have said "the struggle is real" more times than I can count.

While I wish I could be the one reading this instead of writing this, here are 20 confessions from a 20 year old:

1. Don't be afraid of taxes.

They're really not as intimidating as people make it seem. Just make sure you do them correctly and before the deadline!

2. As much as you'll dread going there, you'll actually love your job.

Being in college, I thought having a job on campus would really hinder my college experience. Believe it or not, I absolutely love my job and the opportunities it provides me with. Plus, my boss let's me use our work space to study!

3. Have a plan.

You don't necessarily have to have a planner and live minute by minute, but don't live every day in the unknown. I understand that we are learning, but you'll have more fun when you have a plan and ultimate goal in mind.

4. Your parent/guardian will always be there for you.

I promise the moment you turn 18, 21, or move out of the house, your parents/guardians will always be your biggest fans. They're always there to help a hand whenever you need it; you're their baby!

5. Learn to cook.

This is huge and widely beneficial. If you're home alone for the weekend, it's not healthy or cost effective to constantly hit up the McDonalds down the street. If you plan and cook some healthier meals (without the risk of burning a house down), you're set for life and good eating.

6. Living on your own isn't bad.

Freedom, staying up late, eating ice cream at 11pm without someone saying something, sleeping late peacefully, and being productive whenever you choose. BOOM. *drops mic*

7. But with living on your own comes with responsibilities.

You can't forget about the bills, responsibilities, deadlines, and accountability that comes with living independently. While this part seems draining, you will feel very accomplished while living on your own.

8. You'll fall in love with naps.

I never thought I would confess this, but the art of a 30 minute power nap is a beautiful gift.

9. Start working out ASAP.

You may feel young, but your body definitely won't start feeling that way. While your bones may crack when you get out of bed, working out and staying in shape increases the awesomeness of life. Start experimenting with workout regiments early to find one that you really enjoy.

10. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

This is one of the more important ones. Being out on our own tends to put us in the mindset of having to do it all yourself. I'm not saying to get everything done for you, but use your best judgment and if you really need help: get it.

11. Travel.

Buy your passport. Travel the world. See the beauty of the world that you live. You won't regret it.

12. It's okay if you don't have a significant other yet. I promise.

You don't need a SO to lead a happy life. While they can add to your happiness, it's your heart and your choice to make your heart happy!

13. Start saving money early!

You never know when you'll need money on a rainy day. It brings peace of mind knowing that you have something to fall back on when things go wrong.

14. You're not missing too much if you don't go to prom.

I never went to prom and I like to think I turned out a-okay. If you'd like, you and your friends could do your own version of prom where you get dressed up and go out to eat!

15. Embrace every moment of youth you possibly can.

The responsibilities only get bigger from here, sweets. Embrace the minimal amount of responsibilities while you can!

16. Don't be afraid to have fun while you can.

Roll the windows down, sing at the top of your lungs, use your hairbrush as a microphone, dance in the rain, do whatever you can, whenever you can!

17. Never forget what your priorities are.

While life is meant to be enjoyed, never forget about the most important people and obligations in your life. Remember the ultimate goal of life is overall happiness!

18. Try everything at least once.

You can't have any regrets that way. You can always walk into a new stage of life saying you tried it and, if you don't like it, that's perfectly alright. You can sleep knowing that you tried it.

19. Don't take anything for granted.

You never known when people, things, and opportunities can slip away. Wake up each day with a full heart and a smile on your face.

20. Smile more.

Smiling is greatness. There's no point living each day being sad when there's so much beauty in this world that can provide happiness.

I hope that if you're reading this and you're under 20, you've learned some of this already. If you're over 20, this can serve as the sweet little birdie reminding you how to live the most beautiful life. I know it was refreshing to remind myself of these things. Keep on smiling, breathe, and always stay positive!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
