20 Things People Say When They Find Out You Are From Florida

1. So, you must be used to the heat?

Yeah, I prefer to be outside when it is 102 degrees, it’s really relaxing when I am covered in sweat and can’t breathe. We just use air conditioning…

2. How far are you from Miami?

Because this one time you went to Miami for spring break, so you can use that piece of information to pinpoint where I’m from?

3. Do you go to Disney, like, all the time?

You have probably gone to Disney more than I have…

4. Do you go to beach every day?

Ain’t nobody got time for that. As much as I would love to, the afternoon storms and the tourists (you) tend to get in the way of making that a reality.

5. Florida is not really southern, right?

Maybe not where you have vacationed, but the rebel flags in my high school parking lot would argue otherwise. So will the excessive amounts of sweet tea and grits- not that I’m complaining.

6. Oh, my grandparents live there!

I am sure they do. Please recommend that they retake their driver’s tests.

7. Wow, so hurricanes must be really scary.

When they hit, the answer is yes. The great thing about hurricanes is that we get a pretty big warning about their arrival, and then we stock up on snacks.

8. My friend lives in Florida!

9. Have you ever seen an alligator?

Yeah, I have. No, I would not attempt to “wrestle” one of those horrendous dinosaurs.

10. You are not that tan!

I’m sorry I failed you.

11. So global warming…

…Is definitely a thing.

12. Your state is so screwed up with elections.

Don’t hate on the individuality of my state.

13. Don’t you just want a white Christmas?

We have one every year! It’s called sand.

14. Do you get annoyed with tourists?

Yassssssss.

15. What are those bugs called that get all over your car on the interstate?

Lovebugs. The next time you say Florida doesn’t have comprehensive sex ed, please reflect on these creatures and the education many of us have gained from them.

16. Does everyone have a pool?

Pretty much.

17. Spring Break must be so convenient!

It is, except for the fact that my plane ticket home skyrockets because you want to get wasted on the beach.

18. Are you a [insert random sports team here] fan?

We have a lot of sports.

19. Do you wear flipflops everywhere?

Honestly…yes…

20. Have you heard of Florida Man?

Are you trying to embarrass me?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
