I come from a mixed race/multicultural family: my mom is Hispanic (Puerto Rican) and my dad is white (Most likely Polish). We have yet to do the 23 and Me DNA test to tell us more about my background, but this is for sure what I am so far. What's great about my family is that both of my parents speak a second language, but I mostly grew up hearing a lot of Spanish. It's interesting when people from two different cultures/races unify because, as their child, you get to learn so much about them, both sides of the family and your background. What's even greater is that you have so many hilarious moments or just moments that people who aren't in your family would find a bit out of the ordinary. Here are 20 things only you would understand if you're mixed race.

1. "Don't make me get the chancleta out."

2. Bubbe saying "Don't hurt your kepala" ("head" in hebrew)

3. My Puerto Rican mother making matzoh brei and latkes during the holidays

4. Your parents start to speak each other's languages

5. Seeing your parent get angry and cursing in a language that you don't know all of the vocabulary to

6. Having friends over for dinner and they question what's on the table

7. You've learned about different styles of dancing

8. You train your pets to know more than one language

9. You're the perfect combination of tan and slightly burned when you come back from vacation

10. You've become a master at knowing when people are talking about you in another language

11. There are two different styles of parenting

12. Having many questions about your name

13. You're not really sure how to celebrate the holidays

14. When you find someone who's just like you and you instantly bond

15. People question your authenticity

16. You hear stereotypical jokes about Jews and Hispanics all the time

17. "If you're Puerto Rican, why are you white?"

18. People just assume your identity

19. Seeing all the similarities of your cultures

20. But also seeing the extreme differences

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
