20 Things I've Learned In 20 Years

It's been a solid 20 years, lemme tell you.

20 Things I've Learned In 20 Years

1. Family time is the most important time.

Because those are the people that just get you and have probably seen you at your worst.

2. Always check the weather.

There's literally nothing more annoying than dressing in leggings, sweatshirt, and rain boots when the sun is shining high in the sky.

3. Birthday's aren't for everyone.

I now understand that just because I'm a huge birthday person, that doesn't mean everyone else is.

4. Surround yourself with positive people.

Nothing is worse than surrounding yourself with people who only bring out the worst in you. Don't choose friends who make you feel insignificant. Don't stay with a guy who makes you feel like you're not good enough. Don't surround yourself with people who only know how to kick you when you're down but aren't able to build you back up.

5. Singing is a stress reliever.

I'm a horrible singer, but it's easy and fun, so why not.

6. Don't let people take advantage of you just because your nice

There's a difference between being nice and being walked all over. Friends, boys, whomever it may be, stand up for yourself.

7. Sometimes the hardest decisions are the best ones.

Because most likely the reason the decision is so hard is because you care about it, and if you care about it, it has to do with either yourself or someone that means something to you and in the end if it benefits either you or someone that matters to you, then we're all winners.

8. Ditch those people that don't treat you with respect.

As hard as it is, you need to lose those people that treat you like dirt. You know it, I know it, it's hard, I've been there, but it has to be done, because the longer you surround yourself with disrespectful people the harder it'll be to move on from them.

9. Clean your room when your mom asks you to.

I'm in college now, so this technically is not a current issue, but I went home last weekend and every time I argued with my mom it was because my clothes were all over. So, if I've learned anything, it's just, do what your parents ask of you.

10. Your parents want what's best for you.

Given number nine, I hate arguing with my parents. They mean the world to me. We all need to just get, that they really do want what's best for us.

11. Don't avoid confrontation.

It's so much easier to just talk about your issues with someone than it is to keep them to yourself. That will eat you alive. Take a breather, talk it out, no one can read minds (we all wish we could though).

12. Eat the food you want to eat.

Because why should calories hold you back from eating that ice cream sundae?

13. Bad things happen to good people.

It's unexplainable why some of the best people I know have some of the worst things happen to them. No one understands this, I certainly don't, but we have to know that it's out of our control and all you can do is be there for them.

14. Pep talks actually work.

At least for me they do. Getting a quick pep talk for anything in my life that I might be anxious for always helps the situation, whether that pep talk be from my family, friends, or myself. I suggest you try it if you haven't already.

15. The easiest thing to shop for is jewelry.

When it's one of those days and nothing looks good on me, jewelry always does.

16. Force people to compliment themselves.

I think this is so important. Every time I hear my friends say something negative about themselves, I force them to tell me something positive in contrast to the negative comment. They hate me for it, because who really likes to openly compliment themselves, but honestly it makes them realize "okay there are things I like about myself." Confidence is so important and having people being comfortable to compliment themselves is the first step to gaining that confidence.

17. It's cool to stay in, but also go out.

No one cares that you'd rather be in your bed than getting rowdy at a club, but when your bed becomes your bar every weekend that's not good. Staying in and actually partaking in "Netflix & chill" is cool, but experiencing night life, not in your bedroom is cool too.

18. Take as many pictures as you can.

Things aren't going to be the exact way they were in that exact moment in time. Pictures are more than just a quick photo opt for a possible Instagram. They're the emotions you felt at that particular time, they're the people that made that moment picture worthy, and they're moments that are memories you don't want to forget, or rather that you're trying to remember.

19.Be confident in your choices.

Because if you're confident in yourself and the decisions that you've made, no one will question you.

20. Say yes to things outside of your comfort zone.

If you don't say yes, who will? I guarantee, you will learn something new about yourself just by taking that chance, and if you don't, then at least you learned you're capable of saying yes to new things.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
