I am 20. My oldest brother is 31. For some reason, people have a hard time comprehending an eleven-year age gap.
On my end, it's definitely come with some hardships — for example, my brother left to attend the University of Virginia when I was only seven. And try being a disorganized, confused college student when your brother is a married lawyer with two kids. But still, there's a lot to be learned from having much older siblings, along with the minor annoyances. If you have a significantly older sibling, chances are most of these apply to you.
1. A stranger has mistaken your older sibling for your aunt or uncle.
2. You ARE an aunt or uncle.
3. When you got older, strangers started mistaking your older sibling for your spouse (*cringe*).
4. You rarely needed a babysitter, because your sibling could take care of you.
5. People have asked, "Are you full siblings? From the same parents?"
6. You didn't really receive hand-me-downs because all of his or her clothing was at least ten years out of date by the time you were old enough to wear them.
7. You never got in a physical fight, because it just wouldn't be fair.
8. You never overlapped with them at school, but you had a few of the same teachers anyway (except they were ancient by the time you had them).
9. You have made at least one pop culture reference or used a slang term that went completely over your sibling's head.
10. You always have someone to review your work, whether it be college admissions essays or resumes.
11. Tattling has never been something you've had to worry about.
12. Your sibling has told you about their experiences in high school without cell phones, and you can't quite wrap your head around it.
13. The first time you held your own in an intellectual conversation with them was a big moment for you.
14. As a kid, you only won board games by complete chance.
15. Your sibling could drive you around when you were only in elementary school.
16. Your sibling left for college before you even knew your times tables.
17. Your sibling blazed the path for you, making it easier to get through the teenage years with your parents (a rough time for us all).
18. You look forward to being able to make fun of your sibling when they're reaching 40 and you're still cruising along in your 20s.
19. Once you got to college, you felt like you understood each other a lot better and your friendship really grew.
20. Your sibling is your biggest role model, because they're old enough to be accomplished, but still way cooler than your parents.
