Growing up in a small southern town was such an experience. So many people will never have the appreciation of growing up in a small town instead of a major city. In fact, I love it so much that I have chosen to raise my own family in my small town.
Here's why small town living is better than the city life:
1. I knew every person I graduated high school with. The majority of my classmates had actually been in school with me from the beginning.
2. When on vacation, no one has ever heard of your town. This gives you the upper hand and makes you more unique and stand-out.
3. When I graduated, the county had three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school.
4. We have an annual Mountain Moonshine Festival to celebrate our roots.
5. Directions are so easy that people think their GPS is broken when driving through.
6. We have a corn maze, pumpkin farm and a national park.
7. At some point, everyone has worked at the outlet mall.
8. The traffic is so quiet, I can hear the high school band playing at my house every Friday night for football games (I live four miles away from the school).
9. I run into at least three people I know with each trip to the store.
10. There are only three large housing communities, so most folks live on the side of the road.
11. I went to school with my daughter's daycare teachers, so I know what kind of people I am leaving her with.
12. Our community supports the local businessman and the big guy.
13. When a new restaurant opens up, it usually makes the front page of the local newspaper, and it's packed for about the first two months.
14. Literally, everyone knows my parents and who I belong to.
15. Mountain air is so much healthier than the polluted city smog.
16. You can walk out your front door without being bombarded.
17. There is always something free and fun to do, like floating down a river.
18. You can see the stars at night.
19. You have a real sense of community and belonging.
20. Sweet tea is a good water substitute.
I only listed 20, but there are tons of reasons why I love living in the country. According to the population census, in 2000 only 619 people lived in my town; fast forward to 2010 and over 2,600+ people live here. Clearly, there is something appealing about country living. Y'all come on out and stay a while.
