20 Questions from a Camper Every Counselor Hears

Summer camp counselors just know that from the second they meet their campers each week they will be met with the onslaught of 20 questions times about 1,000 for the course of the summer. Kids are curious, they want to know EVERYTHING and by everything I really mean everything. They get into the nitty gritty personal questions about your life. They want to know what is the plan each day and they always want to know WHY, WHY, WHY? Campers are crazy, interesting, sometimes annoying, but always so fun and give me the best laughs. I present 20 Questions from a camper.

1. How old are you?

I'm 19, How old are you? My campers generally respond with their age then attempt to math it out and see how much older I really am.

2. Are you married?

No, I am not. See above answer about how old I am.

3. Do you have a boyfriend?

Nope, boys have cooties. This response always gets a giggle out of my 5 and 6-year-old campers.

4. What are we doing today?

EVERYTHING! But then I tell them what we are actually doing and they love me for the next five minutes.

5. What time is it?

1:00. 2:00. 3:00... who actually knows it is summer?

6. And follow up to that classic, how long have we been here and how much longer till my mom comes back?

Well considering everyone is still in hyper excited mode, we haven't been at camp long and that means your mom won't be back till later.

7. What's in your backpack?

I'm not sure, what is in your backpack? Really my backpack is filled with every kind of band-aid, each kids snack and various other things needed to survive the day.

8. What is wrong with *insert kid's name here*? and Are they going to be okay?

Who knew a sick or injured kid was so interesting to the rest of the group?

9. Can I have some of your snack?

Nope sorry, we can't share snacks and I am starving.

10. What are we doing tomorrow?

It's a surprise we all get to find out tomorrow!

11. Why does he/she get to go first?

Honestly I don't know, I just picked them from the masses first.

12. Do you have a favorite camper? Is it me?

Nope I like you all equally....Well yes, I do, but I would never tell them that haha.

13. Why do you make us drink so much water?

This is Texas, it is 100 degrees out we need to drink water.

14. Where do baby lizards come from?

Ummmmm.... How about you ask your mom and dad about that one?

15. Do you live at camp?

No, but wouldn't that be super cool if I did.

16. Do you go to school? or also Is this your summer break?

Yes I do go to school so yes this is my summer break. Do you go to school?

17. Can you put a band-aid on it?

A classic question kids ask, that 9 times out of 10 the camper never even needs a band aid.

18. Who are those people?

Uhh other summer campers not in our group?

19. What is *insert any variety of objects here*?

Hmm well what do you think it is?

20. WHY? WHY? WHY?

Goodness by the end of the summer if I am not a pro at answering 'why' questions I need to reevaluate how I answer questions.

Working with kids aged anywhere between 4 and 8 is exhausting because of all the questions and explanations they need of things. But ultimately each kid's random questions makes me laugh out loud and appreciate what it means to be that little... that you can be whatever you want to be and ask whatever questions you want to ask. Parents, teachers and camp counselors so love to all my kiddos this summer, they make me laugh.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
