Finals week has many college students down in the dumps. The countless number of hours spent in libraries slaving away over textbooks and computers is enough to make anyone go stir crazy. Your brain can only handle so much. So when you’ve reached a breaking point or hit a wall, let your brain take a short vacation and take a look at some of the most random, weird facts. They’ll only make you smarter and create great table talk at dinner.

1. Only 2% of the world has green eyes.

2. When you blush, the lining of your stomach turns red.

3. There are no clocks in Las Vegas casinos.

4. It’s against the law to have a pet dog in Iceland.

5. Right handed people live 9 years longer than left handed people.

6. There’s a city called Rome on every continent.

7. Women blink twice as much as men.

8. You cannot snore and dream at the same time.

9. A small child could swim through the veins of a blue whale.

10. There are 1665 steps in the Eiffel tower.

11. China has more English speakers than the U.S.

12. The human nose can remember 50,000 scents.

13. Even though Froot Loops have different colors, they all have the same scent.

14. There are no bridges over the Amazon River.

15. Sunsets on Mars are blue.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines.
