20 Lessons I Have Learned in 20 Years
Raven Bowman

In two decades I have learned a lot. I have made a lot of mistakes and I have learned from them. I have learned a lot in 20 years, so there are a few of the things I have learned in my 20 years.

1. Kindness is great

Everyone appreciates it but some people take advantage of it. Be kind but do not let people take advantage of you.

2. It is okay to say no

You can still be a good person even if you say no to something. In the end, no one is going to look out for you but yourself.

3. Do what you want to do

Keep your best interest in mind and do what you want to do. Even if it means going off your own path a little.

4. It is okay to be selfish sometimes

In order to live your best life, you have to put yourself first every now and then. You can't succeed if you are always two steps behind everyone else.

5. Know the way you deserve to be treated

Once you know how you deserve to be treated, do not take anything else. "He is very dreamy, but he is not the sun. You are."

6. Learn to adapt

Life changes all the time. You have to learn how to adapt and try to make the best out of a bad situation. Go with the flow.

7. Be honest

Lying to yourself and other does not help anyone in the end.

8. Always ask questions

If you do not know something, just ask. It is better to ask now instead of risking looking dumb in front of others.

9. Love yourself

When you learn to love yourself, alone time is awesome.

10. Find hobbies you like

When you have hobbies that you like you have a way to take the frustration out and just to focus on yourself.

11. Always try your best

If you truly try your best you can't really fail. Hard work always pays off!

12. Not all spiders will hurt you

Spiders can be scary but not all of them are poisonous. They usually eat other scary bugs like ants.

13. Think before you speak

Things you say can hurt those around you. So be careful of what you say.

14. Everyone goes through life at their own pace

Just because others are checking off different milestones at different times does not mean you are doing something wrong.

15. Find out what makes you happy

If it's going to college and majoring in something you like or traveling around the world, just do it.

16. Family is awesome

Cherish the time you have with your family because they will not be here forever and you do not want to have any regrets.

17. Be organized

Being organized makes your life a lot easier.

18. You do not always have to have the last word

Somethings are better left unsaid.

19. It is only awkward if you make it awkward

Definitely, don't say "Well this is awkward". You are only drawing attention to the awkward moment and making it worse.

20. Live

Have fun!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
