What's special about turning 20? Let me tell you—nothing. There is nothing special about turning 20. It's the year of little excitement before 21 and the loss of the "teen years." I remember looking forward to the day I would be out my teen years and how magical I thought turning 20 would be. Now I've come to realize there is nothing magic about it, only frustration for the lack of a milestones in your life.

Being 20 isn't the end of the world but I will go ahead and act like it is.

Here are 20 facts about turning the big 2-0.

1. Now that you are officially out of your teens, you are actually seen as an adult.

2. Responsibility is finally setting in.

3. The reality that entering the real world is right around the corner becomes scarier than ever.

4. Did I mention the amount of responsibilities?

5. At 20 you feel like you should be more independent but you still somehow find a way to curl up with your mommy and voice life's struggles you're facing.

6. You've got to be accountable for what you do now more than ever.

7. You question your sanity and don't even know what you're doing with your life.

8. You begin to feel like you're going crazy when having to prepare and think about your future, aka the rest of your life.

9. You're halfway through college—it's time to really start prioritizing and planning for what is ahead.

10. It's hard because even though you are no longer a teen you still don't feel completely grown up yet.

11. At the same time you've been alive two decades, you're starting to feel old.

12. Silly memories from childhood seem far enough away its normal to reminisce on them.

13. You're always busy.

14. And when I said you have responsibilities, trying to balance work, school and bills becomes the daily struggle.

15. You're finally at the age to where it is completely acceptable to eliminate the fake and meaningless friendships that have weighed you down in the past.

16. You've begun to appreciate the little things in life more, not everything is material.

17. Things that used to seem so 'adult' are becoming the norm and 'adulting' has become a real thing.

18. You now have to balance the 'fun' and 'responsible' side of being adult and it can be really hard.

19. You've entered the awkward stage where you have friends getting engaged and having babies and friends who are in a phase of constant drunken bliss.

20. You're never too old to call your mom.

So enjoy being 20 and eat an extra big piece of cake if you want to!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
