Writers have this way of obsessing over words and authors. I think it has something to do with the fact that black curved lines that create words on a white paper is a better piece of art for us. It brings us hope and it makes us whole.
As writers, we tend to obsess over specific authors. We grow obsessed with their words and thoughts and hope that we will write that well one day.
I have a whole journal of quotes, and most of my quotes are from Sylvia Plath. She writes the words that makes my heart flutter and says the things that make me feel less lonely in this messy world.
Here are some of my favorites.
1. “I like people too much or not at all.”
2. “Remember, remember, this is now. Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become acutely aware of all I’ve taken for granted."
3. “Face it kid: unless you can be yourself, you won’t stay with anyone for long."
4. “How we need that security! How we need another soul to cling to, another body to keep us warm. To rest and trust; to give your soul confidence. I need this. I need someone to pour myself into. Maybe I need a man. One sure thing, I haven’t met him yet."
5. “There is so much hurt in this game of searching for a mate, of testing, trying. And you realize suddenly that you forgot it was a game, and you turn away in tears."
6. “You’ve got to be able to talk. That’s tough. But spend your nights learning, so you’ll have something to say.”
7. “I am jealous of those who think more deeply, who write better, who raw better, who ski better, who look better, who live better, who love better than I."
8. “I wish I could have the ability to write down the feelings I have now when I’m still little, because when I grow up I will know how to write, but will have forgotten what being little feels like.”
9. “I love life. But it’s hard, and I have so much — so very much to learn."
10. “Perhaps some day I’ll crawl back home, beaten, defeated. But not as long as I can make stones out of my heartbeats, beauty out of sorrow.”
11. “Yes, there is joy, fulfillment, and companionship - but the loneliness of the soul in its appalling self-consciousness is horrible and overpowering.”
12. “I love people. Everybody. I love them, I think, as a stamp collector loves his collection. Every story, every incident, every bit of conversation is raw material for me.”
13. "Why can't I try on different lives, like dresses, to see which one fits me and is most becoming?"
14. "Perhaps when we find ourselves wanting everything, it is because we are dangerously near to wanting nothing."
15. "Let me live, love and say it well in good sentences."
16. "And by the way, everything in life is writable if you have the outgoing guts to do it. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt."
17. “Why the hell are we conditioned into the smooth strawberry-and-cream Mother-Goose-world, Alice-in-Wonderland fable, only to be broken on the wheel as we grow older and become aware of ourselves as individuals with a dull responsibility in life?”
18. “I know pretty much what I like and dislike; but please, don’t ask me who I am.”
19. “There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.”
20. “Is there no way out of the mind?”
Now go, find your person that says the words that makes you feel less alone.
