This year has been pretty uniquely horrible. Marked by the presidential election from hell, numerous heartbreaking celebrity deaths, devastating war, and widespread suffering, most of us can't wait for the clean slate of 2017.

But as we enter the new year, we can also look back and see that 2016 has brought some wonderful things too!

1. The world tiger count rose for the first time in 100 years (The Telegraph)

2. It was announced that Harriet Tubman will be added to the $20 bill, and other suffragists will be added to the $10 bill (PBS)

3. The Pan American Health Organization pronounced the Americas measles-free (NPR)

4. More than 90 countries gathered to pledge $5.3 billion for ocean conservation (Reuters)

5. Life expectancy in Africa increased by 9.3 years (Quartz)

6. U.S. High School graduation rates reached a record high (NPR)

7. Hillary Clinton was the first woman to garner a major party's presidential nomination (Daily News)

8. Russian infant mortality rates decreased and life expectancy increased (Sputnik)

9. Scientists at Harvard took a huge step towards overcoming antibiotic resistance (GEN)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
