I probably shouldn't be admitting this, but every week I am excited to watch the newest episode of The Bachelorette. Maybe it is because I do not have a lot of other TV shows to look forward to, maybe because it gets me through Mondays, or maybe I just like drama as much as bachelorette Kailtyn does. For whatever reason, I find myself sitting in front of the TV every Monday night, screaming about how stupid everything is (I know, I know, I'm not one to talk).
The Bachelorette has always been a guilty pleasure, but this season, watching has made me feel way more guilty. Here are five reasons why this season is particularly aggravating.
1. Two bachelorettes.
This has been talked about a lot, and I do not think anyone (Chris Harrison?) was really in favor of this. It is one thing getting rejected on national television by one man who is simultaneously rejecting many other women, and it is another thing being the only woman to get rejected by a group of 26 men. Yes, Britt and Kailtyn chose to put themselves in this situation, but it felt like the producers of The Bachelorette were taking advantage of their desperation.
2. Episodes starting with rose ceremonies and ending without them.
While I'm sure this new episode format is the production team's attempt to build suspense, it just seems as though they have lost all of their organizational skills. It started with ending right before the rose ceremony, but in last week's episode, there was not even enough time to finish showing all of the dates. Instead of keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout the week wondering just how Kailtyn would respond to Ian's insults, this format caused me to lose interest in that drama before it was resolved. When the rose ceremony happens at the beginning of each episode, I do not even remember who already has roses from dates.
3. Nick.
This season would probably have been way too boring without Nick Viall from Andi's season showing up, but it also made it ten times more ridiculous. Kaitlyn clearly let him join because she enjoyed kissing him (and wanted to do more), and I do not think it was fair to the other men in the competition because they already knew each other. She said in an interview that she has gotten so much criticism for sleeping with Nick because she is a woman and it is a sexism issue. Maybe she is being slut-shamed by haters over Twitter, but that is not the problem I had with the whole situation. I thought it was insensitive to the other guys, just like the incident with Juan Pablo and Clare in the ocean.
However, the worst thing about this whole situation is that it is Nick. He made everyone cringe on Andi's season, and he was on the bottom of my list of Bachelorette contestants that I ever wanted to see again. He is arrogant, sketchy, and has an uncomfortable ability to make both Andi and Kailtyn "feel like a woman."
4. Kaitlyn drama.
There are two annoying things about the drama that Kaitlyn creates: the way she deals with it and the way she innocently apologizes for it. Personally, I am not an accusatory person, and it bothers me how Kaitlyn confronts guys in front of the whole group. Also, she has a way of turning a reasonable conversation into a fight, like with Kupah and Joshua. Then, after all of the drama she creates at the cocktail parties, she goes back to the group of guys and says she does not know why there is drama and she is sorry that it keeps on happening. She doesn't seem to realize that she is the one causing it.
5. The group dates.
Tony the Healer had something to say about this, and although he took it too far, he had a good point. Why do all of the group dates have to be some sort of competition? Whether it is sumo wrestling or rap battles, Kaitlyn loves to put the men into uncomfortable situations and see which one handles it the best. And don't even get me started on her pretending to be dead so she could hear what the guys would say about her at her Irish wake. What ever happened to the guys having fun together as a group?
It will be interesting to see how this season ends after all of the cancelled rose ceremonies, fed up contestants, and dramatic distractions.
