19 Wishes For 19 Years
Rachel Meltzer

I have now made an entire 19 trips around the sun, so I must be doing something right? As I embark on these next 365 days, here's 19 wishes I have for this year. I'm wishing them for you too.

1. Create the things you wish existed

What's stopping you?

2. May you always live forward

This comes from a book I read recently "The Chaos of Standing Still." (Such a good book-totally recommend!) The point is to not let obstacles or events in your life make you "stand still" and stop moving forward. I love the idea of "living forward" and looking at all that's ahead of you.

3. Be relentlessly brave & authentic- with yourself AND others

The most vibrant & meaningful connections I have made have come from being exactly who I am and sometimes pushing myself out of the places I'm comfortable and into situations that maybe I'm not so comfortable in.

4. Do things from love, not for love

Enough said.

5. Be a person who is able to enable

A big part of being a leader is wanting to serve and show others all that they can be. Be the person who shows others their worth and all that they are capable of. Make others better.

6. Never pass up the opportunity to tell people you love them

You never know when they need it. You'll never know when you can't.

7. Don't let small things get in the way of big things

The bad test grade will not get in the way of your entire degree. The one fallout with a friend will not destroy your entire social life. The one mistake does not determine your entire worth.

8. Live less out of habit and more out of intent

Being intentional is becoming such a big theme in my life & how I am dealing with transition. Focus on pushing yourself into more opportunities & developing deeper relationships.

9. Say yes more than you say no

This means saying yes to more love, yes to more fun, yes to better relationships, and sometimes yes to putting yourself first.

10. Devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning

For me, that's theatre. Find what that is for you, and you'll be able to find the meaning in the lows & feel the joy in the highs

11. Never quiet the call in your heart

If you can't stop thinking about something, chances are that you should act on it. Don't deny yourself and your gut feelings about what you should do and who you should be. You know yourself best. Follow what calls you.

12. Remember your why

Let your "why" motivate you and push you through.

13. Fail forward

Your mistakes will make you better. Don't let them pull you back, let them propel you forward.

14. Surround yourself with the people who remind you who you really are & encourage you to be the person you want to be

These people will make you better & hopefully you'll make them better too.

15. May the bridges you burn light your way

This goes along with "fail forward" but everything happens for a reason. Not everything is meant for you. Burn the bridge, light your torch, and move onward.

16. Do what you can with what you have where you are

You don't have to move mountains to make a change. You can do anything, but not everything. Use your own strengths to make the biggest impact you can.

17. Be the light

Just be good to people. Invest in them. Treat them well. Light up a room with kindness & grace.

18. May you find laughter in the midst of broken days

Every day can't be the best day, no matter how hard you try. Find the good and invest in it. Find the people who you can laugh with when it's not the best day, and let them help you.

19. Do not be afraid of dying, but living with nothing to die for

Minimal regrets- live this year with minimal regrets

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
