As you grow up, you learn a lot about life. You learn about yourself— your interests, disinterests and aspirations. You have the opportunity to create the person you want to be. In the last 19 years, I've learned a lot about friendships, relationships, mistakes and accomplishments. Here are 19 lessons that I deem the most important:
1. Good things come to those who wait.
But at the same time, good things come to those who work for it. You'll never get what you want if you don't do anything to bring you closer to whatever you set out to accomplish.
2. Do more.
Get out there and simply do more.
3. Education is privilege.
Take advantage of it.
4. One of the hardest things you'll ever have to do is grieve the loss of someone who is still alive.
Give yourself time to be disappointed and frustrated. Then give yourself the necessary time to move on. You'll be better for having gone through it.
5. Not everyone you lose is a loss.
When one door closes, open another. People who are supposed to be in your life will always find their way back. And if they don't, they were only meant to be there temporarily.
6. A bad grade does not determine your intelligence.
It doesn't define you. In fact, receiving a bad grade is probably one of the best things to happen. It's a reminder to work harder next time.
7. Time heals most things.
No matter the situation, time does a lot of good.
8. Kindness is key.
Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind.
9. Comparison is the thief of joy.
We're all guilty of comparing ourselves to others now and again.
10. Living on your own is the absolute best.
But it comes with a ton of responsibility.
11. Don't stress about the little things.
There's no use in stressing over a bad grade, unnecessary drama or even the past. Let what will be, be.
12. Health is vital.
Whether it be mentally or physically, taking care of yourself should always be a no brainer.
13. FOMO is a real thing.
At some point you've probably experienced the pitiful "fear of missing out." But sometimes studying for an exam takes precedent to going out with friends.
14. Family is forever.
No matter where you are in life, you can always rely on family to have your back.
15. Friends may not always be forever.
And if you're lucky enough to find true friends, cherish them.
16. You will never be thrown something in life that you can't handle.
Remember: everything happens for a reason.
17. Nice guys aren't always so nice.
Obviously this isn't always the case, but it's important to be careful. Sometimes those who do the most damage are the people you'd least expect.
18. Loving yourself is easier said than done.
But it is so important. It takes time, but being content with your life and who you are allows for better relationships with those around you.
19. There is still so much to learn.
With only 19 years under my belt, I can say that I've learned a lot about life, love and myself. But it's true that there is so much left to learn. There's so much to look forward to in your 20's, and also so much to know.
