If you are reading this, chances are you identify in one way or another with the world of theater. If you have participated throughout school, attend a BFA program at this point in time, a professional, whomever you are. Here is a list of things that you will most certainly recognize and emphasize.
1. You are constantly relating real life situations to a musical or play.
You know that you do it. As soon as you see someone go up to someone else when you know they have some beef, "The Confrontation" from Les Mis starts playing or you think about if they dual what will happen.
2. You always have pencils until you need them.
Unless you have permission to use highlighter in your spiral bound little script then all the power to you. It is a rare map of understanding that will probably get changed over and over again. Or you decide that you are so talented and do your own thing, which is frowned upon. Follow the sacred text.
3. You do insanely silly warm ups.
Yes, it does help. Yes, you do not want to give yourself nodes. You know you look silly. You love it.
4. You have an intense fear of nodes.
Yes, we all have the fear. Some of us may be living with nodes. It is okay, the community supports you and so does your ENT.
5. Your best friend is the steaming machine.
You probably don't look good doing it but glamour is part of the life.
6. You find fake eyelashes EVERYWHERE.
I am guilty of it. They are everywhere. This can range from my car, nightstand and even found in my laundry sometimes.
7. You have gone out in public looking like a hooker.
You didn't choose the intense lip and blush life, it chose you. The local diner? Applebees? Fast food? Whatever calls to you after a long day on the stage.
8. You have mysterious bruises in the most bizarre spots.
Yes, you probably did fall but you won't admit it.
9. You use your own language while talking to friends.
It can be the language of Riff, short phrases such as "book," "method" or so on.
10. You have a dream cast for every show.
You know that you do it. Most of the time you are in the production as well.
11. You have been to an open call.
Everyone is there in a fit and flare with ruby red lipstick. Everyone continues to stare at you. You walk in the room for eight bars and feel just like this puppy. You go home on the train. You are confused and contemplating life decisions.
12. Your LaDuca's.
You spend a lot of money on them but boy do they look good. It is a step in every performers career, first pair of LaDuca's. Always get the three inch.
13. Group Chats/Texts.
You know that it will continue to happen prior to the show closing. Important messages go on there... or you just talk about how much you have to poop in Target (@ The Kit Kat Girls). Group chats are there in times of joy, sorry, bad audition experiences or outside life. Your cast is your family. They are there.
14. Figuring out the drama of who to 'comp.'
It is awkward. May the odds ever be in your favor. If you don't get comped, don't be awkward about it either. It is just uncomfortable for everyone.
15. Choosing an audition piece.
Your friends will probably help you out with this as well. Grabbing your audition binder like... ^
16. Show friends.
You can spot them from a mile away. Show friend = one who is not your friend after your show closes but will need you for various things and hangout with you during the run.
17. Showmance.
18. That feeling you get when you are close to closing.
They are either tears of joy or tears of hate. You decide.
