18 Reasons My Sister Is My Best Friend

She's not just my sister, she's my best friend.

18 Reasons My Sister Is My Best Friend
Briannah Beard

There is no better friend than a sister, and there's no better sister than mine. My sister is my best friend and I wouldn't trade her for the world. Here are 18 reasons why my sister truly is my best friend:

1. She's my partner in crime.

Whenever I need someone to do something with, I go to her first. We can have fun anywhere. A simple shopping trip turns into an adventure around the store and weekend visits turn into memories that will last forever.

2. We still use childhood nicknames.

Even though I know she hates when I call her “Bubba” in public, I’ll never stop saying it. It’s become a habit that I can’t shake no matter what I do. I know she loves me anyway, though.

3. She’s the first person I tell everything too.

Something exciting happened? I text my sister. Something funny happened? I text my sister. Something sad happened? Yep, you got it… I text my sister.

4. We talk every day.

Even though we attend school at different universities, we still make time to talk to each other every day. Our conversations usually carry over from Snapchat to text, and then to FaceTime when we get tired of typing. Whether it’s her looking for homework help or me asking the weirdest questions, our conversations always make my day.

5. She always knows how to cheer me up.

If she knows I’m in a bad mood, she knows exactly what to say and do in order to get me to cheer up. No matter how bad the situation is, she always puts a smile on my face and makes me laugh.

6. We act like idiots together.

Car rides together are never boring. Not only is the music blasting, we’re screaming the lyrics and showing off our best dance moves like we’re in the music video for the song. We probably look insane to other people passing by, but it’s so worth it.

7. We’re so different, yet so alike.

She’s a brunette and I’m not-so-blonde. She has hazel eyes and I have baby blues. She’s a cheerleader and I’m a bowler. But, we can both enjoy an awesome concert. We may not look identical or have exactly the same hobbies, but we do have similar interests.

8. I can trust her with anything.

I don’t even have to start out my sentence with, “don’t tell so-and-so,” because it’s already implied. About 70% of our conversations are top-secret and neither one of us will ever spill the secrets we’ve told each other.

9. We share clothes.

Okay, it may be more like stealing each other’s clothes, but it’s pretty much the same thing as sharing, right? Ever since she finally hit a growth spurt and was no longer a full foot shorter than me, I’ve had two closets of clothes to choose from and I absolutely love it.

10. My other friends love her.

While I may act like I hate hearing someone say, “Your sister is so cool! You should bring her around more,” I actually love it. I love having my sister around my friends because she brings out a different side of me that most people don’t get to see.

11. We don’t even have to talk to communicate.

If we’re sitting at dinner and she gives me “the look”, I know exactly what she’s trying to say. If I’m mid-conversation with my parents and she elbows me, I know that I need to shut up. It’s actually kind of crazy how much we can communicate through non-verbal signals.

12. I can’t imagine being an only child.

I try to think of what it would be like to be an only child, but I can’t imagine it. If I was an only child, I would’ve had no one to play with growing up and I would not have the amazing best friend that I have today.

13. We aren’t afraid of tough love.

I know that she’ll always give an honest opinion. If I ask my mom if a dress looks good on me, she’ll be nice and say yes. My sister will look me in the eyes and say “you look ridiculous” without pausing.

14. She’ll never try to change me.

It doesn't matter if she thinks my decisions are right or not, she’ll never try to change my mind about them. She always supports me in everything I do and I’m so glad that I have a person like her by my side.

15. We’ve been through a lot together.

I never have to explain why I’m upset over most things because she’s right there with me. She’s been by my side through our parent’s divorce, our grandfather passing away, and our not-so-great financial situation. If I didn’t have her next to me through it all, I don’t know what I’d do.

16. Our fights never last.

One minute we’re screaming at each other and the next we’re watching TV together in bed. I will never understand why we get so mad at each other over the dumbest things, but I’m glad we always put it behind us.

17. We have the best inside jokes.

Less than a month ago, my sister literally asked me, “Hey, do you remember that one time with the taco?” and we laughed for about 20 minutes. Our inside jokes may not make any sense to other people, but we think they’re hilarious.

18. She’s stuck with me forever.

When I think of the future, I see her by my side through everything. I see her as my maid of honor in my wedding, the godmother to my first child, and my best friend for the rest of my life. A sister really is a forever friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
