I'm a psychology major. I like learning about the brain and about perceptions and people. Not histograms. I do not appreciate nor am I good at learning about histograms. Or proofs. Calculus may as well be taught to me in Romanian because I won't understand it either way. Unfortunately, I had to take statistics for my major. Several majors require some sort of math credit. If you go to a school where gen-eds are mandated, you'll probably encounter a math class there. While not everyone that isn't a math major is bad at math (some of you are actually really brilliant at it and I envy you), this article is not about those gifted people. This is about those of us who fear imaginary numbers sneaking up on us at any moment (as if real numbers weren't hard enough) and shudder at the mere mention of a fraction. You know the struggle, ya'll. If you don't know who I'm talking about, these are some ways to identify us.
1. When your prof gives a "quick review of things you should already know" on the first day, you know nothing.
2. Whenever the prof asks "understand?" to the class, you nod vigorously to overcompensate for the fact that you have no idea what's going on.
3. Office hours are your number one hangout spot.
4. You have to strategically sit next to a person every class that won't get too annoyed with you constantly leaning over whispering "so how do you do that?"
5. You have literally made up answers to at least half of the questions on your homework.
6. You know how essential it is to have at least one friend that's a math wizard. (May they be blessed for eternity for all the help they give you.)
7. Studying for a math exam is a legitimate stressful event.
8. You've asked a question during class and had the prof look at you like you're insane.
9. You've uttered the phrase "I just need a C-" or "as long as I don't fail I don't care."
10. You look up Youtube tutorials on concepts you're learning in class because one lecture was just not enough for it to sink in.
11. You have to convince people you're actually trying really hard (and you really are.)
12. You've questioned how any of what you're learning in the class is applicable to your life.
13. It makes you mad if you realize that what you're learning is actually important to what you want to do. (Example: Statistics is actually really important for psychology. Gag.)
14. You feel like you're bringing the team down on group projects.
15. The class gives you intense flashbacks to high school courses you hated.
16. If you took AP courses, you hate yourself for not passing the tests back then.
17. When your grades come out you almost throw up because you want to know how you did so bad but at the same time you feel like it has the power to destroy you.
18. When it's all over you vow never to take a math class again.
Just so everybody knows, I totally cried over it.
