In honor of my long-awaited eighteenth birthday I recently celebrated on December 11, here is a list of 18 things I am most excited about doing now that I am 18. Some of these are more practical than fun, but after taking a gap year and living on my own, I ran into a lot of obstacles not being 18.
1. Sign a lease.
Wow, talk about what a nightmare it was to find someone who would rent to me when I couldn’t sign a lease.
2. Receive medical treatment without parental consent.
This one just makes life a lot easier when my parents aren’t around.
3. Open a bank account.
No more co-signers. This account is all mine. I think I’ll start investing in stock too.
4. Get a nose piercing without parental consent.
My mom isn’t fond of piercings and tattoos so I was never allowed, but now...
5. Participate in research.
This past semester I took a psychology class and couldn’t even participate in the required research because I couldn’t legally consent.
6. Vote!
One of the most important things to do as a citizen. I’m excited for the upcoming presidential elections.
7. Drink in Canada.
Road trip, anyone?
8. Serve alcohol!
It was challenging to find a waitressing job I could even apply for while being under the age of 18.
9. Work over time!
These tuition bills aren’t going to pay themselves.
10. Become an organ donor.
Another important thing as a citizen.
11. Get a passport on my own.
My mom is supposed to take a day off of work to sign a piece of paper at the passport office?
12. Participate in jury duty.
A front-row seat to America’s legal system.
13. Full driver’s license!
Pile in every one.
14. Go to a night club.
Dancing is one of life’s best gifts.
15. Go to a casino.
I’ve heard the buffets are good.
17. Rent a Port-a-potty.
What a relief I can finally rent a port a potty.
18. Say I’m an adult! Because I am one!
It’s frustrating trying to prove your independence and maturity when you’re legally considered a child.
