Summer has come and gone and I don't think I'm the only one who cannot wait until it gets to be under 70 degrees here in Louisville, Kentucky. Fall is the best time of the year and it brings an endless amount of things to do, especially in a city like Louisville. This list is guaranteed to give you options to make the most our of the best season. Here are 16 things to do in Louisville, Kentucky this fall.
1. Go to Hubers.
Pick pumpkins, go through a corn maze and eat a massive amount of fried biscuits with apple butter. It's just a hop, skip, and a jump over the Ohio river and it's one of the best places to spend a Saturday during fall.
2. Haunted Houses.
Louisville has a pretty good haunted house scene with endless options. Field of Screams, Baxter Avenue Morgue, Devil's Attic, and so much more.
3. Go to the zoo.
Fall is actually the best time to go to the zoo. It's not too hot so the animals aren't just laying there basking in the sun, and it's not too cold so all the animals are outside enjoying the weather. It's not summer, so kids aren't swarming the entire place 24/7. Not to mention the amazing Halloween trick or treating they have every year.
4. Go camping.
Louisville fall weather is the perfect weather to camp. You can hike in a sweatshirt, but you won't freeze to death at night. Not to mention we are short drives away from awesome parks with gorgeous scenery, like Bernheim Forest and Red River Gorge.
5. Go to Caufields.
Caufields is the place to get your Halloween costume. They have an endless selection of costumes and props to ensure that you have the best costume. And who doesn't love dressing up for Halloween?
6. UofL football games.
I really shouldn't have to explain myself on this one, but I'm going to. The football team this season is, excuse my language, kicking ass. There's really no subtle way to put it. Attending those football games will be the highlight of this fall season.
7. Take a drive down River Road.
I included this during my summer activities list, but it will be even better during fall. Most of River Road is lined with trees and once the leaves change, there will be nothing better than driving next to the river with all the windows down.
8. Go to Maker's Mark Distillery.
It's a short drive to Loretto, KY and it's pretty astonishing to see how KY's biggest pride and joy (we love our bourbon) is made. The grounds are beautiful and it's yet another chance to check out the beautiful fall scenery.
9. Old Louisville Ghost Tour.
Old Louisville has hundreds of old victorian houses that are totally haunted, and who doesn't love ghost tours?
10. Churchill Downs fall racing.
Us Kentuckians, we love our horses. Luckily, Churchill Downs recognizes this obsession with horse racing and they have fall racing, so we can bet our money away during any season!
11. Actor's Theater.
Actor's Theater puts on Halloween-inspired plays every year in their famous, circular theater and the productions are always amazing.
12. Waverly Hills.
This is the ghost tour of all ghost tours. It's one of the most haunted places in America and it's right here in Louisville. If you're brave, you can even spend the night.
13. Museums.
Louisville has plenty of awesome museums to check out, and they're perfect for those rainy fall days. 21C, Frazier, Science Museum, Speed Art, the options are endless.
14. Drink Massive amounts of Heine Brothers.
Heine Brothers is the best local coffee in town, and coffee is always better when it's a little chilly out. The colder weather gives you an excuse to constantly have a latte in your hand.
15. Cave Hill Cemetery.
Not trying to be morbid, but Cave Hill is such a beautiful place. Whether you're visiting a loved one's grave, or just want to go on a walk, the grounds are absolutely stunning especially when the leaves change.
16. Kings Island.
Kings Island is just a few hours north and has an awesome Halloween season. They stay open later and have haunted houses, all on top of the regular amusement park. It's a perfect place to go for a weekend.
I may be missing a hundred other great things to do here this season, but these are definitely some of my top picks. It's time for fall to unravel so I can finally pull out all my oversized sweatshirts and try to knock everything off on this list.
