1. There is no way around being a freshman.
No matter how hard you try, everyone knows…everyone. Maybe it’s the student ID and mailbox key hanging around your neck or the unlimited supply of free t-shirts in your wardrobe from the first week of school that just scream “freshman”. This phase will eventually end— just give it a semester or two.
2. Ice Breakers Go Beyond High School.
Hi, my name is _____. I’m from _____, I’m majoring in _____, one interesting fact about me is…
3. You Will Not Be Friends With Every Person You Meet.
No matter how much you want to, you won’t be friends with everyone. You can try as hard as you like but it will not happen— and it’s perfectly okay. You will meet a lot of people and it will become apparent who is meant to be in your life and who is not.
4. The Freshman 15 Is Real: I’m also anticipating a sophomore 15 and a junior 15…
5. Getting Sick Away From Home Is Terrifying: It’s even worse when you go to the student clinic and you’re expected to know your social security number, insurance company and pretty much every bit of your entire families’ life history. To make matters worse, your mom isn't there to coach you through the dreaded "so what brings you here today?" question.
6. 2:30 A.M. Is The New Midnight: Those assignments you said you were going to do tomorrow? Yeah, it’s tomorrow.
7. It Is A Sin To Pass Up Free Stuff: Free t-shirts, free cups, free food (free flyers you are ambushed with even though you tried so very hard to bury your face deep in your phone to avoid eye contact).
8.Though A Lot Of Things Are Free, Not Everything Is Free: Flex and meal swipes can only get you so far in life.
10. Attendance Isn’t Always Mandatory:
Need I say it again,
11. Attendance Isn't Always Mandatory.
12. The Fire Alarm Doesn’t Care What Time It Is: Those “movie moments” when people are standing outside in the middle of December with towels on and shampoo in their hair? Those are real. (Make sure to remember your room key and pants).
13. Nothing Compares To Home Cooked Meals: Food from the dining hall gets real old, real quick; nothing will come close to food you get at home.
14. You Will Get Homesick. Even if you won’t admit it to anyone including yourself, you will get homesick.
15. Your Laundry Does Not Do Itself. Your room doesn't clean itself either just in case you were wondering.
16. It Is Scary And Confusing But It Is Amazing. College is a crazy thing, simple as that. It is everything you have ever heard and imagined it would be. You will laugh and you will cry (probably more often than not), you will meet some of the most incredible people and do things you never would have thought to do before. Everything people said about college being the best four years of your life is true and it is an experience like none other. So to all of the rising freshman heading to college I leave you with this:
