More often than not, it’s easy to let life get us down. We get so wrapped up in things someone said or did and get easily upset. After this sadness or uneasiness sets in, we long for something to make us feel better but don’t know what that something could be. A lot of people think that in order to be the most happy, they need material things or a significant other to tell them how great they are every five seconds. That’s not realistic. The following 16 things are things that make me the happiest. Maybe they’ll start to make you happy when you’re feeling sad, too.
1. The way the sun looks when it rises in the morning.
There’s something romantic about the way the sun kisses the Earth when she first wakes up in the morning. The nighttime pushes her away but she always returns in the morning, ready to be loved again.
2. Sleeping in.
It’s a simple pleasure, sure, but what a difference an hour can make. It could be the difference between a good mood and a bad one.
3. Getting told, “Good job.”
When you’re having a bad day, small validation can help you feel like you’re important again. You’re always important.
4. Seeing someone you know on the street.
Sometimes a familiar face is all you need.
5. Unexpected gestures.
Did you get home and there were roses waiting for you on the front porch? Take a moment and smell them.
6. The smell after a spring rain.
Trust me, it’s different than the smell after rain in any other season. It’s fresh and new and smells like new beginnings.
7. Making someone smile.
I don’t know about you, but it always makes me feel better to make someone else feel better. Their happiness becomes yours.
8. Realizing someone probably thought about you today.
What a cool thing. Someone cares enough about you to take time from their day to think about how you’re doing or what you’re doing. You are loved. You are cared for.
9. Finding a heads-up penny on the street.
That was lucky, wasn’t it? Think about this, too: it’s possible someone came across that same penny and it was tails-up, but flipped it so you would find it and have a lucky day.
10. Getting new shoes.
Because who can really be sad when they get new shoes?
11. Getting asked to go grab a bite to eat, take a walk in the park, go shopping, etc.
The feeling of inclusion… ‘Nuff said.
12. Seeing people get excited about something they’re passionate about.
The passion is contagious. But also seeing how happy something makes someone is enough to make me smile from ear to ear. Do what you love, love what you do.
13. Reading something you can really relate to.
That’s when you know you’re normal and so are your feelings. Other people think and feel the way you do, too.
14. HUGS.
We forget how important human contact is for our physical and emotional well-being.
15. Getting asked, “How was your day?”
Refer to No. 8.
16. Taking a long shower.
I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of the day is when I’m able to just unwind and feel the warm water rush over me. It’s comforting and this is the space where I’m best able to clear my head. And let’s face it; when singing in the shower, everyone sounds like Beyoncé.
