1.Birkenstocks and Cozy Socks

Rain, snow, sleet, or shine, you can find any outfit with this trend.

2. Dutch Bros Cups in Every Cup Holder

Some people do this on purpose. Especially if they get a pink straw...

3. Owning Maybe One Umbrella

A region that gets a lot of rain just means walk really fast and use anything possible as a hood.

4. Starbucks Snob

Starbucks originated in Seattle, WA. Meaning you can drive down any street and find at least like three within a 2-mile radius. We get very picky when it comes to the taste

5. Timbers vs. Sounders

The PNW has a great rivalry in the MLS. Everyone becomes engrossed and very passionate when watching the Cascadia Cup.

6. The Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon Issue

Someone: Where are you from?

Me: Washington State!

Someone: Seattle area?

Me: No, Vancouver.

Someone: Canada?

Me: No Vancouver is a city right by Portland

Someone: So Oregon?

Me: *gives up*

7. Seahawk Gear Everywhere

The PNW only has one NFL football team. Because of this, the “12th Man” stretches all the way down to Oregon. So if you see Seahawks gear, there’s a very large chance the person is from Washington or Oregon.

8. The Vitamin D Pills

There is a lot of rain in the PNW. So much that certain places rain 9 months out of the year. With so much cloud coverage, this leads to becoming vitamin D deficiency. It’s okay though because you can grab a bulk size of Vitamin D pills from another PNW origin, Costco.

9. Nike vs. Adidas Debate

As many people know, Phil Knight created the brand Nike in Oregon. In Beaverton, Oregon there is the Nike Employee Store where people, professional athletes, and celebrities go to get 50% off Nike merchandise. Well not too far away in Portland, Oregon is the Adidas Employee Store where you also get 50% off Adidas merchandise. There’s definitely a preference for each PNW native.

11. The Instagram

You can tell someone is from the PNW just by the pictures on their Instagram. This can range from pictures of any hike in the Gorge, an artsy rainy day picture at Starbucks, or a picture of their gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO, nonfat, low sugar dinner.

12. Calling the Beaches "The Coast"

The PNW is a large part of the west coast. But in contrast with the sunny California beaches, “the coast” mostly consists of sweatshirts and blankets because of the wind, and staying at least 100 feet away from the -8-degree water.

13. Voodoo Doughnuts

The infamous doughnut shop in Portland, Oregon that locals go when they’re bored. When it’s a Friday night and nobody knows what to do, there is always the “we could go to voodoo” suggestion.

14. The Space Needle

A large tourist attraction based in Seattle, WA. If you ask any Seattle local if they’ve been to the Space Needle they will reply with “once when I was a kid” or “no.”

15. PNW Pride

With all the quirks PNW natives have, we will always be proud of where we are from. And you can definitely tell through our clothing and accessories.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
