15 Ways Freshmen Should Prepare For College

It's almost that time. Summer days are coming to an end. "Back to School" commercials come on every ten minutes on the television. That could only mean one thing for most high school graduates everywhere: Freshman year is fast approaching. When I was freshman at Morgan State University I was excited but nervous at the same time. I would hear numerous stories about what college was like. Some were good, some were bad, some were very crazy. But overall college is a big transition in a young person's life. As a senior in college, I have a pretty good idea what to expect in college and how to prepare for it. It's like I'm a veteran in the NBA giving the rookies some advice. So as a veteran in college here are 15 ways these "rookies" should prepare for college.

15. Do not, I repeat, do not procrastinate.

Let's be honest, we all have done it. We all have received homework and not start it until the day before it's due. While still getting a solid grade. But that trend must end in college. At some point you will definitely be overwhelmed with work. Be smart and schedule out a time do your work in a timely fashion. Trust me waiting the last minute for a term paper is not the move.

14. Make sure you know your way around campus.

Don't be the one to be late to class on the first day because you don't know your way around campus. Maybe find a friend or two and have them help you find your classes days before the semester begins. Proper preparation prevents poor performance.

13. The "Freshman 15" is real!

Please do whatever you have to do to keep the weight and body you have because relax for a month or two you will start to realize this phenomenon called the "Freshman 15". Use your meal plan and ordering food money wisely. The weight will catch up.

12. Get to know your roommate well.

In some cases roommates can literally become your best friend. You both are going through freshmen year together. Get to know each other because you're going to be living with that person all year. My roommate became my best friend because we share a lot the same interest. Hopefully you will be able to have someone who shares the same interests as you and to help guide you through freshman year.

11. Cleanliness is next to
Godliness

Yes you are now away from your parents but you still need to have home training. Clean after yourselves. Do your laundry, clean your dishes, clean your room and yes, make sure you take showers on a daily.

10. Spend time at the library.

The best place to get work done for me is the library. The library is great working environment because it allows you to focus and get work done. Yes, the library may be the last place anybody wants to visit on campus but trust me you will not regret going every now and then.

9. Turn Up!

College is about having some fun as well especially if you are a freshman. Have some fun, meet new people and go to some parties. Just know how to balance your school and social life. Don't be that student that just parties on the weekend but does no work during the rest of the week.

8. Join some organizations.

Whether it's SGA, clubs or an athletic team, get involved in extracurricular activities on campus. Don't be that student that goes to class then goes to the dorm. Having connections and being social is just as important as getting good grades.

7. Use your resources.

Maybe it's the gym, tutoring center, school store or the counseling center, these are resources that are meant to make your experience easier. Make yourself familiar with everything on campus. You will thank yourself and the university for it.

6. Find a squad.

Making friends isn't as hard as you may think. Just communicate with people living in your dorm and I guarantee you will have a crew by the end of your first week. Don't be anti-social. College is about getting out of your comfort and meeting new people.

5. Don't rush into a relationship as soon as you get to campus.

I don't care if he has the best eyes in the world or if she has the best body you've ever seen. Take these first couple months to focus on yourself and get adjusted to college. You will have enough time to find a college sweetheart.

4. Protect yourself.

Yes it's no secret that students have sexual intercourse in college. It is going to happen sooner or later or hopefully never. Guys if hook up with a girl wrap it up and ladies make sure if you are with a dude he has to use protection. You can't start you college career off with a potential baby on the way.

3. Get the supplies and be organized.

To be successful in college organization is the most important. Make sure you have all the supplies you need once you receive your multiple syllabuses from your professors. Laptops, flash drives, binders, pencils, pens and even a calendar are important things you need. Stay on track.

2. Save your money.

I can speak from personal experience. Saving money as a incoming freshman major. You're on your own, your parents cannot make every decision for you. Being financially responsible is a huge step to becoming an adult and college student. Buy things that you need more than things want. Don't go spend $20 to get in a party every weekend. Don't go spend money on an outfit or video game knowing you have to get books for class. Most importantly don't call your parents begging for money because your bank account is in the negative.

1. Just enjoy yourself.

College can be stressful but at the same time it's one of the best times of your life. Be ecstatic and blessed you have the opportunity to be a college student. Try new things, meet new people, set goals and get the best grades possible. If you do these things, I promise you freshmen year is a time you will never forget.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
