15 Types of Roommates You Have In College
Ken Colwell

College is an interesting experience...you take classes, find your passion, make friends, join clubs, get internships, and you dorm. Of course, not everyone dorms, but for those of us that do it's not always a dream come true. Not everyone finds their best friend roommate on the first go, especially at St. John's University where you're not just living with one person...you have the chance of living with up to 7 or 8 people. That's a lot of personalities. Here are some of the roommates I've had and the ones you will most likely encounter in your dorming adventures.

1. The one who keeps to him/herself

Not too much to say. They're not usually confrontational, and it's not that they avoid contact they just prefer to be alone. (Personally I think this is me this year. I don't mean to be a closed book, I'm just focusing on other things).

2. The one who's really involved in campus life

You'll never see this person because they're so involved and when you do see them it's because you're at a school event that they're probably hosting.

3. The one who’s about to join a sorority/fraternity

I say about to because if they've joined already they're probably rooming with their "sisters"/"brothers". They're chill and depending on your friendship prior to them joining, they'll make time for you. Just keep in mind they're also busy keeping up with sorority/fraternity duties, events, and such.

4. The outgoing/friendly one

Self-explanatory. They're chill.

5. The one with the significant other

This one makes you think, "I didn't know this suite had an extra triple." Their person is probably nice though and hopefully you all get along. But if not talk to them and understand it's his/her room too.

6. The one who's always working

College is expensive and when you're a full-time student with even a part-time let alone full-time job? Prepare to see this person once in a blue moon...which could be good because hello room to yourself!

7. The one who's on a full ride/the really smart one

Their smartness will annoy you.

8. The who's always cleaning

Don't get me wrong--this can be good. We all want a clean space, but I once had roommates who said, "If your eyes aren't burning, you haven't used enough bleach."

9. The one who never cleans

You almost always get this roommate after the neat freak. This roommate makes you wish you had your neat and tidy roommate who made you take turns bleaching every inch of the bathroom once a week.

10. The one who smokes

Whether it's cigarettes or hookah--unless you're down with that it's pretty annoying.

11. The one you can't stop arguing with

This doesn't necessarily mean you're enemies. You just argue about everything.

12. The one who lies for no reason

Okay so you may not have this type of roommate, but my freak roommate story involved a bunch of nonsense lies.

13. The one who's a Broadway maniac

Especially being in New York you're bound to have a roommate who is obsessed with all things Broadway! Or concerts. Or anything music related, you will have some type of music obsessed roommate.

14. The one who's an athlete

Or a gym/fitness person in general. They'll be doing a lot of eating "right" or regularly exercising.

15. The one who's your best friend

If you're lucky you will eventually meet the roommate that makes all other roommates worth the pain so you can enjoy this one--your best friend.

All in all people are people. You will encounter an array of personalities upon living in the dorms, but be open and accepting to them. If any issues occur just speak honestly, and kindly about it. At the end of the day we all just a want space we can go back to and feel at home and ourselves.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
