In 1995, Alicia Silverstone rocked the big screen in her yellow plaid jacket and skirt, and the coming of age classic Clueless was born. Ever since, the movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma has been a staple of MTV’s monthly lineup, and young women from all over can relate to those times they totally felt like the ditz with a credit card, Cher Horowitz. But what about this 90’s cult classic perfectly depicts what it was like to be a teenager and made us all totally buggin’?
1. The first world problems.
Admit it, there are just some mornings when you stare at your closet stuffed with clothes and realize you don’t like anything in there. While Cher is a little overboard, she shows that even the girl who has everything struggles in the morning. Pro tip from Cher herself: “I don’t rely on mirrors, so I always take Polaroids."
2. The party scene.
Rollin’ with the Homies is hard work, but Clueless sets the scene for a perfect teen party. Someone will spill a drink on your shoes. There will be those kids in the bathroom shaving their heads and the couple fighting the whole night. There’s always that one girl who passes out, and you’ll always get held up at gunpoint on your way home. Wait, that last one doesn’t usually happen? Well, Clueless has it mostly right.3. The soundtrack has all the youth anthems.
With songs from No Doubt’s “Just A Girl," to David Bowie’s “Fashion," the soundtrack, even if it's dated, are songs that both musically and lyrically describe what it’s like to be a “Kid in America." If you’re out of your high school glory days, these tracks will bring you right back.
4. The gym class struggles.
“I would just like to say that physical education in this school is a disgrace. I mean, standing in line for forty minutes is hardly aerobically effective. I doubt I’ve worked off the calories in a stick of carefree gum.” - Cher
5. Cher, Dionne and Tai are you and your besties.
Self-centered or not, you and your best friends are always on the same page, and let’s face it, your outfits are always on point.
6. Those besties are brutally honest.
Because if your best friends can't be honest with you, who can?7. You're very particular about your guys.
"You see how picky I am about my shoes, and those only go on my feet." - Cher
Ladies, if a total loser is violating your space, feel free to give 'em an "As if" and give them the boot.
8. Driving is tough.
“Honey, as far as you’re concerned I’m the messiah of the DMV.” – Cher’s driving test instructor
Cher struggles in getting her driver’s license, and she couldn’t argue her way out of failing her driver’s test. We all have those moments where we do things we probably shouldn’t while driving, and even the best drivers can definitely relate to Cher when she fails her driver’s test.
9. There's nothing a little shopping can't solve.
Sometimes you totally need to unwind, and what better way to do that than bringing new life to your closet, by having a little shopping spree!
10. Your dad can be tough, but loving.
“Listen, if anything happens to my daughter I got a 45 and a shovel, I doubt anyone would miss you.” - Cher's dad
Dad cares about you, and he doesn’t want to see his little girl get hurt.
11. If you're going to insult someone, you do it in a classy way.
If you’re going to talk-trash, always sound intelligent when you do so. This movie is so rich with comebacks, you can’t help but try and use them every now and then.
12. You don't mind "vegging out."
You don’t want to go out every night, sometimes you just want to have a fun night of watching cartoons instead of going out to the bars and parties… is there really anything wrong with that? Besides, Cher’s right – party clothes are so binding, you get all dressed up in clothes that make you feel fat, then the cops come and break the party, and it makes all your efforts of looking good pointless!
13. When you have to give presentations in class.
Take notes, Trump. Cher Horowitz is stepping up to the podium and is ready for a good old fashioned debate about letting “Hay-ti-an” refugees in the country. Fun fact, it was actually Alicia Silverstone who mispronounced “Haitian," and the directors loved it so much they kept it.
14. The struggles of getting your report card.
15. You don't have to search for love, let it find you!
So, you probably shouldn’t fall in love with your ex-step brother, but the sentiment is just the same. Cher was searching endlessly to find Mr. Right at the age of 16, only to realize the guy for her was right under her nose. You’re young, you just have be patient and love will find its way to you!
