Mom,
We've come a long way, and I'm honestly shocked you've been able to put up with me for this long! Despite you having to beg me to clean up after myself and to stop spending all of my money on pointless thing every now and then, I think our relationship has only grown stronger. I'm lucky to call you not only my mom but my best friend. So with that being said, I would like to thank you:
1. For introducing me to the best music at such a young age
Whether that be the Dixie Chicks, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain or Madonna, I will forever scream all of the lyrics with pride, just as I watched you do in the car growing up.
2. For nagging me to put away my laundry, do the dishes and pick up my clothes, because now it's just instinct for me to nag my roommates to do the exact same things
“Chill, I just left a dirty fork in the sink.”
3. For passing down your sense of style and expensive taste in clothes
So, uh, at what age is it appropriate to start shopping at the Gap because now we both can't afford any of this.
4. For "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Dirty Dancing," "Grease." Thank god you showed me what good movies are.
And for giving something to binge watch for the nights I have no plans, which, coincidently, is a lot.
5. For passing down your taste in guys, which has slowly but surely started to grow on me.
Now that you've got me hooked on "Grey's," we can make a deal to share Derek Shepherd.
6. For ever allowing me to step foot in the most dangerous store known to a broke college girl — Target
Once you're in, there's really no stopping what kind of damage you'll do to your bank account.
7. For getting me in the habit of going out to eat, so now I'm left spending all of my paycheck on food
The sole reason why my bank account is negative.
8. For getting me addicted to couponing, we take it very seriously
"What do you mean I can't combine this with other in-store offers?"
9. For showing me how to navigate through a grocery store without looking like a complete idiot
Even though 99 percent of the time I go, it's just for pizza and junk food.
10. For always forcing me to stay in sports even though we can all agree they were never really my cup of tea
My #1 fan as I failed miserably and sat the bench.
11. For getting me hooked on caffeine
Why did you let me drink so much Starbucks at such a young age? You basically forced me into the basic white-girl lifestyle.
12. For not disowning me every time I did something stupid growing up
I have a gut feeling you can't be mad though, because you did the exact same things.
13. And for continuing to not disown me, even when I'm moved out and in college, continuing to beg you for money every day
*In Uber on the way to bar* "Mom, I'm just staying up late studying; it's just money for pizza, I swear."
14. For sharing your loving yet sarcastic sense of humor with me
I now speak fluent sarcasm thanks to you.
15. And for most importantly becoming more than my mom but my best friend
You truly are the best.
I guess you can say this is where the saying "like mother, like daughter" comes from. I’ll take it as a compliment any day. Love you, Mom!
